I've seen enough of these things to know not to get too excited from a intrasquad scrimmage, but darn...hard not to be impressed from our first taste of the Will Wade era.

VCU Black defeated VCU Gold tonight, 85-76 in front of the 5,223 fans in attendance, a Black & Gold game record.

The Black team was led by senior Melvin Johnson's 24 points on 8-16 shooting but saw three other players hit double-digits in the win. Sophomore Justin Tillman was one of those players, dropping the games only double-double with his 20-point, 10-rebound performance, almost all of his points coming in SportsCenter top-10 fashion.

Tillman was a part of a fierce frontcourt duo for the black team, joining Mo Alie-Cox and his 15-point, 8-rebound night. Alie-Cox added a game-high three blocks in the win.

Newcomer Korey Billbury, an Oral Roberts senior transfer, added 14 points, 6 rebounds and three steals for team Black. Teammate JeQuan Lewis added three steals of his own and dished a game-high 10 assists in the win.

Team Gold fought hard in defeat, cutting their 18-point halftime deficit in half behind some strong second half play from freshman Samir Doughty who led all players with five steals and was one of three Gold players to score 11 points on the night.

Doughty was joined by sophomore Jonathan Williams and newcomer, JUCO transfer Ahmed Hamdy Mohamed with 11 each.

Gold sophomore Mike Gilmore added 13 points for his team, connected in five of his nine attempts including 2-3 from long range.

VCU will play a pair of closed-door scrimmages next, reportedly against UVA and Vanderbilt then return to the Stu to take on California (PA) in their exhibition opener on Friday, November 6.

The Rams tip up the regular season on Nov 13 against Prairie View A&M in the opening round of this year's 2K Classic.
