Coming off a big win against Rhode Island on Tuesday, Coach Wade and the Rams were ready for a rematch of the January 16th contest that took place down the road at University of Richmond. The Rams needed 45 minutes that time but extra time wouldn’t be necessary when the teams met at the Siegel Center on Friday night. VCU would win, 87-74.
VCU opened up early on the Spiders but Richmond wouldn’t let VCU’s lead see double digits in the first half and the game saw its first tie at 24 a piece with 7:40 left in the first. The Rams were up by just 4 at halftime.
The second half would see VCU pull away from the Spiders, getting their largest lead of 19 with just a little more than 7 minutes left to play.
Sophomore Justin Tillman was huge for the Rams in a win that would see 5 players score in the double digits. Tillman ended with 15 points, Junior Jequan Lewis, 13, Junior Mo Alie-Cox, 12, Senior Melvin Johnson, 20, Junior Jordan Burgess with 14.
The Rams were dangerous from behind the arc on Friday night as they would hit 11 of 22 from three point range. Johnson would tie B.A. Walker for all-time leading three point shooter with 269.
VCU won the 76th meeting of these cross town rivals, moving the series to 49-27 in favor of the Rams.
The win marks VCU’s 20th win on the season making them 20-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play. VCU will travel to Fairfax to play George Mason University on Wednesday February 24th.
