VCU won their fourth straight game tonight, taking down Fordham with relative ease in front of yet another sold out Siegel Center crowd, 76-60.
The Rams got a balanced scoring attack in in the win, getting double-digit scoring from three players, led by Melvin Johnson's 13, and nine points from three other players.
Johnson was one of two players to shine off the bench as freshman JeQuan Lewis posted a second best points in his 18 minutes of play. Juvonte Reddic chipped in the final double-digit night and added a game-high 10 rebounds as well.
Rob Brandenberg, Jordan Burgess and Treveon Graham all posted nine points for VCU, Graham doing his in just 15 minutes as the Freight Train was derailed with a strained toe and sat out the majority of the second half. Graham limped to the sideline in obvious pain, then was taken to the lockers for several minutes before gingerly returning in a looser pair of shoes and a wrapped foot. There's no official word on when he'll return.
Despite the loss of Graham the Rams held Fordham to 37.3% shooting on the game, turning them over 18 times in the process. VCU however struggled to hit shots as well, shooting just 33.8% from the field but connected on 23-of-27 free throw attempts. The Rams out-rebounded Fordham 46-40.
The win moves VCU to 17-4 on the season, the best start at VCU under head coach Shaka Smart, as well as 5-1 in league play, good for third behind SLU (6-0) and GW (5-1 but with a head-to-head tie-breaking win over VCU).
The Rams will take on the University of Richmond in a rare brunch matchup, tipping up at 11AM in a game that will air on ESPN2.
