Coach Smart said the flood gates would open for the Rams soon enough in response to a question asked on VCU's cold shooting following the Rams three-point A-10 quarterfinal win over Richmond Friday afternoon.
Today was flood gate day, and Davidson was unlucky enough to get caught in the canal.
VCU scored their most points since a mid-December victory over Northern Iowa, dropping 93 on the Wildcats of Davidson in the 93-73 A-10 semifinal win.
The Rams got off to a cold start, trailing 16-4 with under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. A Mo Alie-Cox and-1 dunk sparked a quick 8-0 VCU run, then from there on the Rams hit an extra gear, outscoring Davidson 40-12 over the final 12 minutes of the first half.
The Cats weren't done however, as Bob McKillop's squad clawed their way back within single digits, a Tyler Kalinoski three capping a 19-2 Wildcats run that pulled Davidson within five.
VCU had a run of their own to respond, scoring the next 10 points to go back up 15.
Davidson never really challenged from that point on, as VCU was able to answer virtually every bucket and hit the majority of their key free throws down the stretch as the Wildcats started their fouling barrage with over three minutes to play.
VCU finished 25-30 from the stripe and hit 12 of their 24 attempts behind the three-point line.
The Rams held the nation's fourth most prolific offense to just 7-26 from deep for a 26.9% clip.
Four players posted double-digits in VCU's balanced attack, including a team-high 18 from both Treveon Graham (7-10) and Mo Alie-Cox.
Graham added nine rebounds to Mo's eight. Alie-Cox hit eight of his 10 free throws to help lead the Rams to victory.
JeQuan Lewis added 13 points while Terry Larrier scored 11 of his own.
Lewis finished with four assists while backup point guard Johnny Williams added a team-high five to just two turnovers. Williams added seven points in his 17 minutes of play for VCU.
The Rams got one of their best team efforts of the season, getting valuable contributions all the way down the roster.
The win punches VCU's ticket to Sunday's A-10 Championship game between the winner of Dayton and Rhode Island. It will be VCU's third consecutive A-10 title game, having advanced to Sunday all three season's since joining the conference. VCU has played in five consecutive conference title games dating back to 2011 in CAA play.
