The Rams wrapped up their 2014-15 regular season with a 71-60 win over George Mason on an emotional senior night.
The black and gold honored seniors Jarred Guest, Briante Weber and Treveon Graham before the game, then celebrated some more on the court in VCU's 22nd win of the season.
VCU started the evening by jumping out to an early 33-19 halftime lead after junior guard, Melvin Johnson, drained a beyond NBA range three-pointer to take the Rams into the half up big. VCU had struggled to shoot early but forced 15 first half Mason turnovers to dominate play early.
The Rams were a little slow out of the second half gate, allowing Mason to get within four points in the second half but used a late run and a big JeQuan Lewis three-pointer to nail this one shut.
Senior Treveon Graham led VCU with 23 points in the win. The Freight Train added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals to finish off his final Siegel Center game in style.
Fellow senior Jarred Guest got the start and hit four of his seven attempts to finish with eight points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal in his 18 minutes of action.
Briante Weber sat in a leg brace after recently having knee surgery but dropped his warmup jacket late in the game as as if he was prepared to enter the game. In the post-game press conference following, VCU coach Shaka Smart admitted he considered putting Weber in the game but thought it wasn't the right thing to do.
Sophomores JeQuan Lewis and Mo Alie-Cox both finished with double-digits nights for the black and gold.
Lewis posted 13 points to go with his three assists while Alie-Cox added 11 points on 4-5 shooting as well as six rebounds and two blocks in the win.
As a team VCU connected on just 38.3% of their attempts including a 7-21 effort from deep. Another cold shooting night but one saved with a havoc-filled defensive effort.
The Rams will hope the shooting heats up next week in Broolyn, NY. The Rams will most likely play Thursday at 2:30PM baring a second half collapse by the Richmond Spiders who lead Saint Louis by nine points at the half of that game at the time of this posting.
If that stands the Rams will play as the five seed and will miss a first-round A-10 tournament bye for the first time since joining the conference.
They will take on the winner of Wednesday's game between George Mason and Fordham and with a win would advance to take on 4-seed Richmond in a chance to break a two-game losing streak to the Spiders.
