Video: VCU fights off Pirates; beat Hampton 69-57 [INSIDER]

After winning the season opener on Tuesday, the Rams were back in action on the Siegel Center on Friday. This time, they welcomed the Hampton Pirates in the Regional Round of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic, presented by Old Trapper. VCU secured their 2-0 start with a — win.

VCU enjoyed a comfortable lead for about 35 minutes until Hampton went on a 16-0 run to cut VCU’s lead to just 7, 57-50. That would be as close as it would get.

Sophomore Marcus Santos-Silva led all Rams in scoring with 16 points on the night making 8 of his 9 attempts. Redshirt Junior Marcus Evans was not that far behind with 13.

The Rams with a decent defensive effort, holding the Pirates to shoot just 29% from the field, only connecting on 16 of 62 shots.

VCU shot less and made with, going 23 of 54 on the night. The battle of the boards was a toss up. VCU grabbing 41 rebounds to Hamptons’ 44.

Friday night’s homecoming match up marked their first since the 2009-2010 season. Junior De’Riante Jenkins did not dress out for the game.

The win moves VCU to 2-0 on the season and will host Bowling Green State University, Monday November 12th at 7pm as part of the Legend’s Classic. The game will be televised on MASN.
