After handling American University on Wednesday this week, VCU welcomed back one of its fiercest rivals in Old Dominion to the Stuart C. Siegel Center. VCU holds the most wins in the storied history with 47 wins against ODU’s 43. Saturday evening would go VCU’s way as the Rams would hold off the Monarchs, 76-67.

Conference alignment may have changed but the rivalry has not. Currently a member of Conference USA, it was Old Dominion early as they would nail their first 4 three pointers and take a 18-6 lead against the Rams.

After tying it at 35 each to end the first half, it would be VCU, outscoring ODU in second half, 41-32. Junior JeQuan Lewis would lead all Rams in scoring with 16 followed by Senior Melvin Johnson with 13.

VCU would maintain about a 10 point lead but ODU would try to foul their way back into it and for a second, it looked like it was working after they hit a three with little time left to make it a single digital VCU lead.

VCU hopefully, exorcised some demons by hitting 20 of their 28 free throws while ODU took just 17 on the night, hitting 8 of them.

On the defensive end, both teams were evenly matched according to the stat sheet. Both ODU and VCU had 9 and 10 turnovers, respectively. VCU was able to convert those 10 turnovers into 17 points.

The win moves VCU to 4-2 on the season and will travel to Tennessee on Wednesday, December 2nd to take on Middle Tennessee.
