It has been over a decade since VCU lost a season home opener and on Tuesday night the Rams looked to make it 13 straight home opening wins as they welcomed Gardner-Webb University. It was more of a battle than the Siegel Center faithful were hoping for but VCU got the 69-57 win.
While, of course, everyone is happy to be back on the court, no one showed it more than Junior Marcus Evans. After his first cross over, step back three pointer went in, you could see a wave of emotion come over the guard.
Evans’ appearance off the bench was a surprise to ram nation. The Chesapeake native chipped in 9 points in 9 minutes.
Junior Issac Vann led all Rams in scoring with 16, while Junior Mike’l Simms was right behind, contributing 12 points in the win.
VCU took a 16 points lead into the half but GWU would cut it to a single digit VCU lead with 8 minutes left to play. That would be as close as the Runnin’ Bulldogs would get.
The home opener extends the consecutive sellout streak to 118. The Rams have beaten the GWU in all 3 of their meetings.
VCU will face Hampton University Friday, November 9th at 7pm as part of the Legends Classic. The game will air on MASN.
