VCU used a hot second half to pull away from Northeastern in tonight's 79-66 win. The Rams trailed by five with just over a minute remaining in the first half, a deficit they erased in 17 seconds before taking a lead into the half, a lead they would never surrender.
Northeastern kept things close, tying the game with 13:11 to play, but VCU's Treveon Graham provided the Rams with 10 points in just over four minutes including a sensational four-point play to help get this one out of reach. Graham led all players with 24 points in the win and added eight rebounds for the black and gold.
The Rams had struggled to shoot in this past week's Puerto Rico Tip-Off but got back on the good side of the iron, hitting 55% of their attempts on the evening including 59.3% in the second half. VCU did however struggle to hit free throws, a trouble spot for the Rams this season, hitting just seven of 17 attempts in the win.
Senior forward, Juvonte Reddic, led all players with 10 rebounds and added 17 points in 25 minutes on the night. Reddic once again found himself strapped with foul trouble however, finishing the night with four fouls, and left seven of his 10 free throw attempts empty at the line, and area he's struggled in early in the season.
VCU spark plug Briante Weber brought down the house with a thunderous fast break dunk in the second half and finished the night with seven assists to just two turnovers and added seven points and five steals in the win.
Sophomore guard, Melvin Johnson, had a big first half for the Rams, posting nine of his 13 points in the first stanza.
VCU was without 6'8 forward transfer Terrance Shannon's services this evening as he attended to a family matter in Georgia but got an impressive performance from redshirt freshman big Mo Alie-Cox, who blocked five shots and added seven points on 3-3 shooting as well as two steals and three rebounds in his career high 27 minutes.
The win moves VCU to 5-2 on the season as they head to Nashville Sunday for a tough road matchup against a 7-1 Belmont team that's boats a win at then No.12 UNC.
