VCU wasted no time in kicking off the season with a bang, posting 48 first half points and an 18-point halftime lead the Rams would use to comfortably distance themselves from the Vols in tonight's 85-69 win as a part of the Veterans Classic in Annapolis, MD.
Melvin Johnson did most of the first half damage, scoring 20 of his game-high 23 points in the first 20 minutes of the game. Johnson hit eight of his first 10 shots include 4-of-6 from distance.
Senior Treveon Graham got off to a slow start but bounced back, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the second half to finish with a 15-point, 14-rebound double double in the win. The Rams played a small lineup most of the night but managed to out-rebound the Vols, 49-42.
Jordan Burgess (10) and freshmen, Terry Larrier (11), round out the list of double-digit scorers for the Rams.
VCU was without senior point guard Briante Weber who was finishing a three-game suspension that started in the preseason.
The Rams were forced to rely on a platoon of guards to fill in at point guard after tonight starting point, JeQuan Lewis, left the game in the first half after suffering a scary head injury. Trainers said Lewis suffered a concussion after being pulled to the ground by Tennessee big, Dominic Woodson.
The Rams move to 1-0 on the season with the win and will return to the Siegel Center for a home opener this Tuesday against the Toledo Rockets at 6PM.
