VCU used a 17-0 run to start the second half to defeat a tough Stony Brook (9-5) team last night, 81-63.
The Seawolves out of the American East conference hung with VCU throughout the first half, trailing by just one after Briante Weber hit a buzzer-beater to send the Rams to the lockers with the lead. VCU then did what they have done so effectively over this now four-game win streak, turning Stony Brook over 21 times and going on yet another big run to put an opponent away.
After giving up 52% shooting to the visitors in the first half, the Rams locked down, holding the Seawolves scoreless for nearly seven minutes to start the second half, ballooning a one-point halftime advantage into a comfortable 18-point cushion.
Treveon Graham did his part on the offensive end, catching fire in the second stanza to the tune of a 16-point output to finish the game. Graham led all players with 20 points on the night and added a team-high seven rebounds in a game VCU struggled on the glass.
Fellow sophomore, Briante Weber, posted an active line of 14 points, nine assists, seven steals, three rebounds and a block. Weber had zero turnovers on the night and grabbed six of his steals in the first half alone. It was Weber's fourth double-digit scoring game of the season and his sixth game with at least five steals.
Seniors Rob Brandenberg and Juvonte Reddic added 11 points each for the Rams. Both paced the Rams with a team-high eight first half points each.
Melvin Johnson brought yet another strong game off the bench, posting 12 points in 22 minutes on four-of-six shooting from the field. Johnson has scored at 12 points in his last three games for VCU and has eight double-digit scoring outputs this season.
The win puts a bow on the Rams' 12-3 non-conference season. They'll open A-10 play with a home opener against former CAA foe, George Mason, this Thursday at 7PM.
