VCU cut into a an 11-point William and Mary lead to head into the half down 3, eventually pulling even with the Tribe and taking the lead for good with a clutch Bradford Burgess 3-point shot with only 1:21 to play. VCU free throws iced it in a 59-55 CAA victory.
Quinn McDowell came out on fire for W&M, hitting all four of his first half shot, including a perfect 2-of-2 from downtown while VCU was outrebounded 25-11 to start the game.
Joey Rodriguez kept the Rams in it early hitting two clutch 3-pointers, and lead the Rams with 13 overall on the night.
Jamie Skeen has been the go-to guy for the Rams when they've needed someone the most, and his two free throws late put the game out of reach. Skeen finished with 12 poitns to go along with seven rebounds on the night.
Bradford Burgess didn't take a lot of shots on the night (3), but hit them when we needed a bucket the most, and finished with 9 points, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 7 rebounds of his own.
Freshman Rob Brandenburg continued to show flashes of brilliance in very limited time, pickpocketing W&M three times in only 9 minutes of play. Brandenburg's one-on-one defense was too much for Tribe point guards, as he easily turned the Tribe over for one breakaway dunk and another fast break that resulted in a missed dunk but with two shots made at the free throw line.
The Rams shot only 38% on the night but were able to (stop me if you've heard this before)..."wreak havoc" on the opposition, by stealing the ball 10 times and forcing 16 Tribe turnovers.
The win was big for a VCU team that stumbled at of the blocks in conference play early last year, especially with CAA favorite ODU losing a head scratcher to perennial bottom dweller Delaware in their first conference game of the season.
The Rams have five nonconference games before heading to Atlanta to take on Georgia State January 3rd, starting this wednesday in what could be a shootout at the Siegel Center against the nation's top scoring offense in VMI (6-3).
