The black and gold got one more tune up before next Friday's regular season opener, this time taking on Shaka Smart mentor, Bill Brown, and his Cal U Vulcans.
The Rams were without senior point guard Briante Weber but had no problem with Cal U, throttling the Vulcans to the tune of a 92-43 drubbing that saw just one VCU player play more than 20 minutes on the night (JeQuan Lewis).
Melvin Johnson once again led VCU in scoring, posting a game-high 20 points in just 17 minutes of play. Johnson continued his hot preseason shooting, connecting on six of eight 3-pointers and hit seven of his nine shots in the win. Johnson was followed by freshman Justin Tillman who thrilled fans with a number of monster dunks that added up to a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 17 minutes of play. Tillman added two blocks off the bench.
The freshman was one of two to post double-digit scoring, as fellow 2014, Terry Larrier, added 11 points in 17 minutes for the Rams.
Jordan Burgess had the hot touch from deep once again, going 3-5 from range to help the redshirt sophomore get to 10 points in 14 minutes. Burgess added three assists on a night the Rams would dish 22 total.
Point guards JeQuan Lewis and Jonathan Williams filled in for usual starter Weber, dishing 4 dimes each. Lewis finished with 9 points and added two of VCU's 14 steals on the night.
The Rams destroyed Cal U in every aspect of the game. They out-rebounded the Vulcans 48-30, turned 20 turnovers into 30 points, owned the paint to the tune of a 55-18 points in the paint win, and got 43 points from VCU's bench alone, matching Cal U's team total.
VCU will take the week to prepare for the Volunteer's of Tennessee in a neutral court battle at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
The Vols are coming off a 2014 Sweet 16 season but graduated the majority of their production from that team and lost head coach, Cuonzo Martin, to the Golden Bears of California Berkeley.
That game tips Friday, November 14 at 6:30PM and will air on CBS Sports Network.
