After a good conference win in Wilmington against UNCW, the Rams looked to add to another road win just down 64 East in Williamsburg.
VCU would have to play without Senior guard Brandon Rozzell, who led the Rams with 22 points against the Seahawks. Due to a broken hand sustained in practice this week, the Black-and-Gold will be without their sharp shooter for 2 to 4 weeks.
Last time the Tribe of William & Mary played the Rams, it was in Richmond and the Rams won after the Tribe’s Quinn McDowell missed some clutch free throws. This time the result would be the same with the Rams beating the Tribe 70-52.
The story of the night was the Rams true freshman, Rob Brandenberg. He must have thought he was on the playgrounds back in Ohio. Brandenberg led all Rams in scoring with 22 points, getting to the rim at will. He is also the only Ram to score more than 20 points in a game as a freshman.
The Rams would receive big help from Senior Jaime Skeen with another double-double, dropping 15 points on the night along with 12 rebounds. Even though the Rams are now 12-5 on the season, it was rare that the Rams led their opponent in rebounding, 29-23.
After trailing by 9 at the half, the Tribe would not call it quits and would cut the Rams lead to just 3 points in the opening minutes of the second half at the Kaplan Arena.
The broadcast on Comcast Sports Net Plus was accompanied by VCU’s own Robby Robinson and Mike Ellis calling the play by play. Call us bias, they did a great job and would love to see/hear them on TV more often.
The Rams will host the Huskies of Northeastern on Saturday. Northeastern, coached by Bill Coen, is the only team to come in and grab a win against the Rams at the Siegel Center in the past two seasons.
