The #10 overall recruit in the class of 2020 wants to declare for NBA Draft......

#10 overall recruit Makur Maker was supposed to graduate this past June.... However, he was deemed 2 credits short of receiving a High School diploma.

Under the current NBA CBA Agreement.... a player shall be eligible for the draft as long as...
A. He is or will be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year in which the draft is held... AND
B. at least one NBA Season has elapsed since the player's graduation from high school (or, if the player did not graduate from high school, since the graduation of the class with which the player would have graduated had he graduated from high school).

So he was slated to graduate in 2019.... but now he won't graduate now til 2020.

So should he be able to go straight to the NBA?

Remember a couple years ago when Mo & Jordan had to sit out their first year because they didn't have enough credits or something in HS or something along those lines? What if they had found that out and stayed in HS for another year, that could've affected our recruiting, and might've allowed another team to slide in there and "steal them" from us.

What if one of our current recruits for next year was in a similar situation as this guy, where he was originally supposed to graduate this year but instead had to wait & finish a couple more credits, thus pushing him back to next year to come out of HS.... and he thought he was good enough to go right to the NBA?

While this particular recruit may not directly involve VCU.... I posted it here because it could affect our recruiting down the road if this opens up a loophole for players to skip having to wait a year before going to the NBA.

Feel free to move it if you want. Just figured this might be the best place to get peoples reactions/responses.

Mo and Jordan sat out for a different reason. There are like 6 identified core HS courses that all recruits have to take. Both Mo and Jordan changed HS during their 4 years. There was some differences in the coverage and make up of a couple of courses...one might make a case that a course was repeated, which is not allowed.
Mo's situation was worse somehow and he had to sit out on a probational basis and couldn't practice with the team. Jordan had to sit but could practice with the team.

Both Mo and Jordan did actually, officially graduate with all the necessary credits required. Maker does not have the necessary credits to achieve graduation. He can't even get accepted to college in the first semester because he did not graduate. Very different from Mo and Jordan.....neither of which would have been on the team nor in college had they not actually graduated.

This is (another) problem with the separate recruiting sub-forum. I see there is a new post in VCU RECRUITING because RECRUITING shows up in bold, but when I enter the sub-forum, it turns out to be a post about basketball in general, not about VCU at all. Not picking on you, Rowdy; just pointing out that (a) the separate sub-forum was a turrble idea in the first place and (b) if it is going to exist, it should IMNSHO be limited to news about guys we are recruiting.

End of rant.
