Basically the AQ is just a place holder for whoever is in first place at the time. I don't think we should assume we're on the bubble based on that. If you look at BracketMatrix the few people who have us in its based on projecting us winning the tournament since we're currently the best team in the A-10.
But is that place holder always a 12 seed? My point is that 12 seeds are usually teams that would at least be on the bubble if they were not AQ. If that place holder is always a 12 seed, then never mind, but I don't think it is.
If they had us as an AQ and a 14+ seed, then that's not usually occupied by teams that are even sniffing the bubble.

the bubbles / First 4 are usually 11-12 seeds.

The 12 seed is almost always an AQ team.

Last season the first four switched from two 11 seeds to an 11 seed and a 12 seed but before that it was always an AQ team occupying the 12 seed.

That's a very important factor, IMHO. Every team, every season is different, an the more turnover from one season to the next, the longer it may take for a team to gel. We're certainly playing more team ball now than we were in November.
It's not an official metric. Obviously each committee member can consciously or unconsciously value what they deem important.

This one I struggle with; part of me says it makes sense to value late season more; the other says the games in November have the count too and these early season games have to matter. If we were sitting on the opposite side of the fence having beaten Memphis, AZ State, and Temple then went through a rough patch to end year (ala 2011) we'd be saying early season should count the same.

Don't forget, when looking what we did last year, that we lost to ur in our first tournament game. I think if we had any chance at an at-larger, that game killed it.
May be correct on that. Feinstein stated Rhoades had us projected as getting in the tournament if we won one game on the A10 tourney.

Yeah, I hear you. And I agree that every game should matter. In the numbers, like Net (or even RPI), every game counts the same, and I wouldn't advocate to mathematically "weight" them in any way. But I think that's why there's a committee to make the choices, and they shouldn't simply go down any numeric list and rubber-stamp it. There's a human aspect to sports that can never be fully captured in any metric.

Being that VCU is 72, a blowout win on Saturday will put us into the upper 60s....so long as those we pass are losing/not playing well at home. I can see at least 4 or 5 who might stumble to drop quite a few slots (I'd through Pitt in there ha)

The real challenge is next week-----early February road games and then Dayton at home. Just need the guys to play as they have been and if they make it through this stretch it should be fun.

Just keep getting better and Go VCU!
