Players 2023-24 Roster Thread

Let me try this. What makes sense to you? Playing Nelson at point and having Shulga at two guard with Zeb playing as well or coming off the bench? He could easily go three guards and a wing with Bairstow and a center like Rose or have Lawal play the 5. He has many options even with an 11 man rotation.
I’d like to see Zeb at 1 Shulga at 2 but Offense running through Shulga. Much like Joey running point (sort of) in Maynor’s last year. Have Nelson off the bench. Add Wheeler, Bairstow, and Billups and you’ve got a good athletic, big squad. Billups sits when KK gets healthy.

However, If Billups D holds up and he is better on O then sit Zeb and let him lead the 2nd unit. Either way Billups or Zeb we are good 1st group or 2nd group.

Reallly hoping that Bairstow and Shulga really show out this year.

Who is your "pet cat" on this team?

Explainer: When Bill Parcells was coach of the Dallas Cowboys, he referred to "pet cats" as players who scouts or coaches liked so much that they were willing to stick their neck out for them, even though no one else seemed to understand the attraction. The phrase has morphed a little to mean a player that you irrationally think will do really well.

For me, it's Michael Belle. I'll admit I've seen very little of him playing, and I've obviously not seen him play in a VCU uniform, but I have a really, really good feeling about this kid. Like, the kind of feeling where I think if he sticks around his jersey could be in the rafters one day. It's irrational I know, but that's the game.

SO ... who is your pet cat?

that's actually a good pick. I think (hope) his long term ceiling is very high but the dude is a freshman learning a new system from a new staff playing with new team mates on a new continent. Hard to see how he hits the ground running. And yet . . .

Belle seems like a popular blow up pick across the board. Seems like everyone understands(or wants to) the attraction.

Obviously my statement was irrational. That's part of the fun of the pet cat game!

Can’t wait to see that guy fully healthy, comfortable and hopefully balling freely.

Billups made Class 4, first-team All-State as a Varina sophomore - very rare. His junior years was a COVID bust ... then he added a second, first-team All-State award as a senior.

And consider, he was a teammate of Nelson at Varina and Wheeler at Class 2 JM. Both Varina and JM won their respective state crowns.

So you’re tellin me the guy is a winner.
