Just as important to West's boys team is Christian Fermin.
Fermin broke West's single game boys scoring record with 43 points against Pocono Mountain East on Thursday. Fermin also set the program's record for made field goals with 21 baskets on just 25 attempts.
West head boys basketball coach Rich Williams said he found Fermin's efficiency the most impressive part of the performance.
"People will say, 'well he's 6'10" so that's easy' — that's not easy," Williams said. "It's just not, especially when you got teams doubling and triple-teaming you."
"One could boil down Fermin's domination to his season averages through 11 games of 22.3 points, 14.9 rebounds and 5.3 blocks, but even those numbers don't capture the whole picture. Fermin will take what he wants on offense when he sees the opportunity but has also demonstrated the ability to kick out to open teammates.
Teammates JuJu Pagan (10.8) and Justin Love (15.7) are both averaging double digit points totals, giving Fermin reliable options to turn to when faced with defensive swarms.".
Fermin will need to improve his free throw shooting, though, to level up his game. Already committed to play Division I basketball for Virginia Commonwealth University, Fermin has shot just 52.1% from the free throw line on 73 attempts.
Arguably Fermin's most noteworthy charity stripe performance came in a tough 47-44 loss to William Allen, when he missed four of seven free throw attempts.
The blame can't fall solely on Fermin's shoulders for the defeat to Allen — just as the wins aren't solely his doing — but it's difficult not to imagine "what if?" after a three-point loss in which one of the best players in the entire state missed four free throws.
But for now, Fermin has just 10 games left to worry about before reaching his senior year's playoffs. With West's sights set on districts, Williams looks to keep his team focused on grinding out each win.
