Some of you have been critical of our program after losing early games vs. good teams.
I believe our guys have gone through some expected learning curves and we are ready to start a streak.
9+ wins in a row will get us back into the at-large conversation. Calling it now. Let's GO!

9+ wins in a row to get back to the at-large conversation is a tough place to be… even if the completion is weak.

And I’m not sure we’ve lost to good teams.

The biggest issue is that it feels like we’re worse now than we were 4 weeks ago.

Very fair, we really should have beat ASU and should have played a more complete game against Temple. We had the pieces - they just didn't fall into place at the right times. Memphis is a top 25 team (kenpom) - ASU top 50 - Temple @93. No bad losses.

We have since showed that our offense can be decent (our FG% was 49% yesterday). And we know the deffense can be one of the best. We have some home games coming up that will help us fit this all together.

We have a history, even pre-Rhoades, of missing on marquee games in the OOC. However, Wade and Shaka still made the tournament, and still had wins. Now we miss marquee games and no longer have the confidence we will make the tournament. A 9+ win streak may be possible, but the more important aspect would be how do we fair against the top of league? A win streak is great but if we’re losing to SLU/Dayton it doesn’t matter.

Why do we know this team can have one of the best defenses?

What I do know is that our coaches need to utilize their best players better. Ace can’t have 5 shots. He and Nunn need to combine for a lot more shots.

And we shouldn’t be in a position where we need to win 9 straight games to get into the bubble.

One step at a time. Gain some confidence.
This team is really good. We just haven't clicked yet.

True, we probably should have won at least one of the games we lost, and it sucks.
We all know this team has the potential, just getting there a little later than we hoped.

We need to get to our potential, if there is one, immediately. Outside of winning the A10 Tournament, getting to our potential much later won’t mean much.

No bad losses doesn’t mean we’ve lost to good team. We’ve lost to mediocre teams.
Mediocre? The KP ratings of the teams we lost to are 49, 25, and 93. Memphis will probably get votes in the AP Poll or maybe even be ranked this week.

It should be noted that BracketForecast (who used to post here) and SBUnfurled have created a NET estimate metric that has Arizona State and Memphis as top 30 teams in the NET, though it remains to be seen how accurate their formula is (they’ve been working on it for over a year). That would leave Temple as the only puzzling loss, but it would still be well within Q2.

The only thing that sucks for us is that if we manage to somehow correct all of our problems, we likely only have two or three Q1 win opportunities left, all in conference play. I think we can be fine if we don’t lose any more games we should win (and I don’t count Temple in that category because we were not favored).

Let’s see where those teams finish the season. Where they are now means nothing. They’re mediocre teams that we lost to. My bet is that only one of the 3 will make the tournament.

And those prediction have us:
19 spots behind JMU
20 behind Tarleton State
13 behind UMass Lowell
2 behind Duquesne
18 behind UMass
28 behind Seattle
21 behind Grand Canyon
7 behind Hofstra

It’s a śhit show.

Memphis and Arizona State appear to be quite good at this point. Temple is not a bad team, though they do seem to be a different team, in Philly as opposed to anyplace else. This isn't as bad as losses to Wagner and Chattanooga.

That said, it's not like anyone is happy about the losses. At least, I hope not. Losses suck, but we're in a better place after 8 games this year than we were after 8 games last year. Still a lot upon which to improve for VCU, but if we can close out the OOC at 10-3, then we've set ourselves up to at least be in the conversation.
