In Brooklyn is our only hope
Brooklyn is the only hope for every A-10 team to get into the tournament. SLU may still have an outside shot at an at-large, but this looks like a one-bid league for sure.

Not going to change until Byers is gone.
not disagreeing with this but my take is this is Rhoades' offense - byers is just the asst that is tasked with this as one of his priorities. Xs and Os are still MR - in game MR is calling plays/sets - not sure if you swapped roles between Brunt and Byers the results on either O or D would change much

what has always struck me about Rhoades' assistants is that most have such a short resume of who they have worked for
I think more of the successful assistants that land head coaching gigs have worked at 5 or more quality programs - those guys get to see a lot of different approaches and their network is more greatly expanded and they appear to be more ambitious (at least on paper) and the majority are D3 players (sometimes it is nice to have a coach that has played at the same level and understands from real life the intricacies at that level - not meant to be an indictment in general because a number of D3/D2 players have been successful as D1 coaches

I would like to see new blood in every other year or three at assistant/s. maybe one assistant becomes long-term but..........

It tells you a lot when your assistants aren’t getting offers to be head coaches or to become assistants at P5 programs. This is the most coaching staff stability we’ve probably ever had. And that’s not a good thing.

This board will be ugly until Mike is fired.
I dont think its that bad. We do have a handful of people like yourself who believe that the next best thing, who will also stick around is out waiting in the wings.

There is a reason Mooney still has his job. Mike just needs to make adjustments and Ed needs to have a sit down and basically dictate that he need to improve the offense and the product or he will be gone.

At the 2 million dollar price point Mike isnt getting it done. Now say he were at 500k to 800k 20 wins and a poor OOC and NIT is fine. But that isnt the case here.

Mike shouldnt be fired but Ed needs to step in.

Just to be clear, are you using Mooney as a positive example? I think that’s where we’re headed with Rhoades and it’s not a good thing.

I’m actually not looking for “the next best thing, who will also stick around.” As I’ve stated before, I would rather have a coach that’s looking to move up the food chain and is doing well enough here that teams are coming after him. I’m fine with having a new coach every 3-5 years if it’s because they’re moving to P5 jobs. I don’t want a forever coach if it means forever mediocre.

As for Ed stepping in, I’m not sure he has the skillset to change anything. And when you hire friends it’s really hard to be critical of them.

We currently rank 301st nationally at 0.916 points per possession. Just absolutely brutal and inexcusable. A garbage job by everyone involved.
Not to shabby compared to an assist/turnover ratio that is 342nd. Effective fg% is 314th. Rebound margin is 293rd, kind of a bright spot really.

Here my take on this: the majority of MR's experience has been at the D3 level. As a player and as a coach until recently. VCU is the highest level of basketball that he has been a part of as far as I know. Therefore, I have to assume his connections in college basketball are relatively limited. A coach has to hire assistants he can work with and trusts. If MR's circle of colleagues and associates are mainly non P5 folks, I have a hard time seeing how we can aspire to be more P5-like with so little P5 experience in our program, starting with the AD.

Our program really started to take off under Capel and then on Norwood's watch. Both with deep ties and experience with P5 programs.

Yes. They are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Two of my friends went to Hampden-Sydney and they hate Randy Mac. Rivalry is big I think.
No offense to them and I know they're both great schools, but I don't think there's much MR can emulate from those programs to elevate VCU.
