What does Coach Rhoades winning record actually mean? Coach Rhoades has been here 6 years and doesn't even have a signature big game win. When more than half of your opponents are Net/RPI 150 and up you should win half of your games.
Yep. It is smoke and mirrors. They stack wins against bad opponents and even manage to lose a few of those.

I am not on board... just yet. But this loss was the worst one in a long long long while.

However, I would love to know what happened in Mike's "lost year" where we beat LSU then the locker room completely crumbled. I am sure that people know. I am also sure these "insiders" won't share on a public forum.

BUT..... I am seeing a lot of that year in this years team.

Add in the new tranfer rules and losing the locker room again could be absolutely devastating.

Let's see how things play out a bit more and I will see how I feel after the OOC to see if I am on the fire Rhoades team.

Not to be a conspiracy theorists, but to piggyback on your "lost year" comment, I wondered to myself last night if DeLoach was really sick.

I am not ready to say Rhoades needs to go. I know it's his sixth season but I am not in support of firing him.

However, I agree that changes need to be made. I don't know if that means getting new assistant coaches or what. Mike Rhoades is a perfectly capable coach but he needs to surround himself with more talented assistants...and it hurts me to say that because I really like our current batch of assistants personality-wise.

Also, firing a coach with an overall winning record kind of makes the program look even worse than it already does. It sure as heck makes the fan base look bad and validates my issue with their demand for instant gratification that I've had for years (since people wanted Will Wade's head on a silver platter for starting his first season 5-5...and we haven't even reached that point yet, we're 5-4!).
I'm not one that calls for a HC to be fired right away myself... but something's gotta change & change sooner rather than later.

3 of the 6 seasons (counting this one) that Mike Rhoades has been the HC, we have started 5-4... before MR... only 1 time since 2004-05 did we start 5-4.

Also dating back to the 2002-03 season... VCU has lost a combined total of 30 games by 15 pts or more. Overall thats not bad.... but whats bad is... of those 30 games that we've lost by 15 pts or more.... 13 of them were coached by MR & his staff. More than any other coach in that span... heck almost as many as the other 4 coaches (Capel, Grant, Shaka & Wade Combined.. in less than half the time).

Feb 2022- 30 pts, Dayton
Jan 2018- 27 pts, @ Dayton
Feb 2018- 24 pts, @ GW
Nov 2017- 23 pts, @ Seton Hall
Jan 2022- 20 pts, @ St. Bonaventure
Feb 2020- 18 pts, @ Saint Louis
Feb 2020- 18 pts, @ Richmond
Dec 2017- 18 pts, Illinois (Neutral Site)
Jan 2021- 16 pts, @ St. Bonaventure
Jan 2018- 15 pts, Richmond
Jan 2021- 15 pts, Rhode Island
March 2019- 15 pts, UCF (NCAA Tourney Game)
Nov 2022- 15 Pts, @ Memphis

For as much $#!t as people give WW for being a douche or any other names hes been called over the years.... you know how many 15 pt+ losses he had in his time at VCU .... 1 (Illinois at a Neutral site in 2017)... Edited & Fixed

May not have been the greatest people person according to some fans/players.... but he sure knew how to get the most of his players when they stepped on the court.... even if some players didn't like the guy.

Look for Rhodes to go “nuclear” tonight. The bench will shorten, and his ire will become evident. When VCU blows Howard (Net #300+) out of the Stu, you’ll hear in the post game presser how things are “back on track”. University leadership will smile, high level donors will exhale, the ardent supporters will proclaim “See we told you haters”, but some of us will know that what we witnessed was little more than the start of the next cycle, a smooth patch in an otherwise bumpy road, a single reprieve that will inevitably be followed by “more of the same”. I hope I’m proven wrong but I have little faith that I won’t be

Wow, hadn't seen that UNCW-Jacksonville score till it was brought up here, but that sure should be a cold splash of water to the face of the fans on here who continually act like every team that beats us or nearly beats us just so happens to be very impressive.

We are not a talented program at the moment, including administrators, coaches and players. You don't have to try to do these mental gymnastics to come up with plausible looking excuses.

Hopefully we win tonight versus Howard and dominate them, but then again that's the hope every night we play and the reason people are being negative on here of late is not because they love negativity, it's because the program is sinking and sinking fast. Also, no need to try to pretend like there's some huge strategic benefit we get from losing recent games that allows us to try things that teams that are winning don't get to try. It's better to win and worse to lose and when we lose we should just note that it's bad and not try to make these excuses. Teams that are winning can also experiment with different lineups if they want. Yes, let's hope we play better and win, but there's no need to mark excuses for this program at this point particularly given that our head coach is now literally more than half a decade into his job.

the pattern is well established. Hype early. Followed by missed opportunities against P5 teams. Followed by beating up on less-athletic teams (we’re kinda screwing this part of the cycle this year). Followed by hype. Followed lastly by getting stomped by in-conference foes in meaningful late-season games.

We had a couple of "bad apples" on that team that caused most of the internal and external problems. They were WW players. I am not positive it was all on MR. This team does not appear to have any outright bad apples, but we have some that are immature.
what’s is WW? mike deserves some responsibility for the players he brings in though.
