You are allowed two scrimmages and an exhibition counts as a scrimmage. They chose two closed door scrimmages over an exhibition game.
Them playing 2 secret scrimmages still wouldn’t explain them not having an intrasquad scrimmage for the fans… unless they think it would be an embarrassingly low turnout and they wanted to avoid that.

I think you’re allowed one secret scrimmage plus one exhibition game OR two exhibition games, but the intrasquad scrimmage is a completely separate thing.

VCU will have the B&G game, the secret scrimmage against Villanova, and the exhibition against Shippensburg. So, 3 events before the season starts.

I’m not sure what’s up with Richmond. I guess they’re playing 2 secret scrimmages, but that still wouldn’t explain not having an intrasquad scrimmage for the fans… unless they think it would be an embarrassingly low turnout and they wanted to avoid that.
I do no remember them ever having an open scrimmage.

Richmond used to have open scrimmages but I think those went away a few years ago because no one showed up. Richmond is in full-blown football mode in the fall so I'm not really surprised. Also, the video I linked is extra embarrassing because that was after their Sweet 16 run and still nobody showed up.

Most schools have their team scrimmage the Friday night before a home game that’s expected to have good attendance and promote them together. Plenty of schools are in football mode and have a basketball scrimmage too.

I don't know any more than you do but, if he has any aspirations to play professional ball, I don't think his chances will be very good as a five. As a four, his chances may be very good.
Justin Tillman was mainly a 4.... but when times called for it... he played the 5.... and up until his senior year he didn't really shoot the 3 ball.... and well he's playing professional ball.

I don't know much about Johns.... but I do know one thing... @rollins77 has been watching/working basketball games for years & he certainly knows what he's talking about 99.9% of the time. And when he doesn't... he's smart enough to either not comment or let someone else who might know better, talk about it.

We won and we moved on to the Elite 8. Who gives a rats ass if we were “outplayed”? Sports happen and sometimes there isn’t a need to overanalyze the outcome. The Houston Astros just swept the Seattle Mariners 3-0 in the ALDS despite only having a lead over the Mariners in 4 of the 36 innings that were played. You think the Astros are kicking themselves wondering how they can do better than that?

You came late into this conversation. @rollins77 said there are many ways to win basketball games using the Final Four teams its -4.1 rpg average as an example.

The fact is you can't win on a consistent basis without controlling the boards.

If you want to use final four team as an example then dont ignore the fsu sweet 16 game. We got destroyed on the boards on both ends and only won by 1 point in the last second. The ONLY REASON we won that game is that FSU team, which was 3 1/2 inches taller than VCU at every position, missed a sh!t load of dunks, layups and put backs (36.5 %). That's an anomaly.

The two teams played the same game 2 years later in Puerto Rico with a better shooting FSU again destroying VCU on the boards. FSU blew VCU's doors off.

Sure we got dominated on the boards that game.... but we also shot really well that game, not to mention double digit steals & of course the key block at the end of the game.

Also, if you've ever looked at my Stats threads over the years.... we've gotten domintated on the boards.... MANY TIMES over the years... some games we've found a way to win, other games we've gotten slaughtered.

But on the flipside.... we could dominate the glass ourselves.... but if we aint shooting well... we could still get crushed.

Also.. you bring up the game 2 years later in Puerto Rico.... like Bruh.... we were NO WHERE NEAR the same team. All of our key F4 guys were gone. So lets not compare teams like that.

Just let it go.... VCU Won the game & advanced to the Elite 8 to beat Kansas... who we then beat & made it to the Final 4.... it was a magical run. Just let it go bro.

Also if I were you, I would quit trying to argue about basketball with @rollins77. He's very knowledgeable when it comes to the ins and outs of basketball.... VCU & otherwise.

I don't think I'm saying anything revolutionary here. We know Brandon is a natural 4. Coach has said he'll play primarily at the 4. He started at the 4 Saturday in the Black & Gold. But guys shift positions depending on matchups and ability. I'm actually surprised this has been such a spirited debate.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. It's certainly not rocket science or revolutionary or anything.

Guess people are just bored & need something to talk about until the exhibition.

It's still the off season and some people just like to be rambunctious.

Yep...outscored em
Minor detail of that game that often gets overlooked is that Darius Theus probably won us that game in the first half. That was the game he showed the world, “VCU is here to stay after these seniors leave.”

When he took over for Joey after the early foul trouble, FSU looked primed to bust that game wide open. His play in the first half is probably the biggest reason we were in it at the end. I knew we were in good hands after watching Darius step up like that on the biggest stage. His defense and command of our team on both ends was impressive.

You are arguing that a team who shot bad all year, had an anomaly game where they shot bad against us. The argument doesn’t follow….
