My thoughts on this new 12 team format:
1. The biggest winner in this is the Group of Five conferences. They are now guaranteed a spot in the playoff every year (6 conference champions ranked highest by the committee, with no minimum ranking requirement). Based on these criteria, Cincinnati would have even got a first round bye last year. This makes the move to the Sun Belt by JMU look even better.
2. This might help keep the ACC, PAC 12, and Big 12 from breaking up. With a guaranteed spot in the playoff, there is a little less reason for schools like Clemson and Oregon to switch conferences. It doesn’t get rid of the huge financial gap between those 3 conferences and the SEC/B1G, but it softens the blow a little.
3. Notre Dame has a decision to make. They won’t be eligible for the first round bye because they can’t be one of the 4 highest ranked conference champions. At the same time, they will be playing one less game per year because they don’t have a conference championship game. They have to decide if the possibility of getting the bye is more valuable than the extra week off before the playoff starts. Notre Dame would have gotten in last year as the 6 seed and hosted Utah with the winner going to play at Cincinnati. I think they would have taken that.
See this is what confuses me

Would ND Have been the 6 or would they have been lower?

Are they doing the P5 Conference Champions & the Highest Ranked Group of 5 Conference champion get the Top 6? Or are they gonna take them all and seed them & the 6 at larges based on where they finish in the final standings? Cause that could affect the seedings big time.

If they put the 5 P5 Conf Champs & Highest Group of 5 Conf champ as the top 6 & the At larges after.... the highest ND could be.... is 7 without a conference... so it'd look like this

1. Bama (sec champ)
2. Michigan (Big 10 Champ)
3. Cincy (Group of 5 Champ)
4. Baylor (Big 12 Champ)
------ BYES--------
5. Utah (Pac 12 Champ)
6. Pitt (ACC Champ)
7. Georgia (At Large #1)
8. Notre Dame (At Large #2)
9. Ohio State (At Large #3)
10. Ole Miss (At Large #4)
11. OK State (At Large #5)
12. Michigan State (At Large #6)

If they seed them based on where they finished in the rankings.... It'd Look like this
1. Bama (sec champ)
2. Michigan (Big 10 Champ)
3. Georgia (At Large #1)
4. Cincy (Group of 5 Champ)

5. Notre Dame (At Large #2)

7. Baylor (Big 12 Champ)
8. Ole Miss (At Large #4)
9. OK State (At Large #5)
10. Michigan State (At Large #6)
11. Utah (Pac 12 Champ)
12. Pitt (ACC Champ)

Ranking of the conference champions only matter for the 4 byes. Seeding after that is done based on the final CFP rankings, where Notre Dame was #5. The four highest ranked conference champions would be seeded 1-4 (Alabama, Michigan, Cincy, Baylor). Georgia is the high ranked team left and get’s the 5 seed. Notre Dame is next and gets the 6 seed. And so on. Your second list is the way it will work.

Here is the NCAA’s release where they explain the format and show what the bracket would have looked like last year.

See I got an issue with that..... Imo... it needs to be all one way or all the other.

So either the 6 automatic bids get the Top 6 spots or Just seed them 1-12 based on where they finish in the rankings.

I say this because what if your ACC, Big 12 & Group of 5 champ are all ranked outside the Top 8 in the CFP Standings. That means one of the 3 will be the #4 seed despite not being in the Top 8 in the standings... where as a Team like Georgia or ND who are considerably higher in the rankings might be better suited for a Top 4 spot based on who the better team overall is... despite Georgia not winning their conference and ND not being in one.

But if they're gonna make winning conference titles mean something like getting a bye and a home game.... then the bottom 2 conference champs imo should get the 5-6 seed and be guaranteed a home game as well.

Otherwise just seed them 1-12 based on where they finish in standing... so if UGA is #3 in the polls despite not winning the SEC Title game.... they still get the #3 spot, if ND is #4 despite not winning a conference championship... they should be #4 in this scenario.

I don't like the idea that 4 conference champions are guaranteed a home game no matter where they are seeded & the other 2 are not.

They had to get a bunch of conferences in a room and make some compromises. This is what they could get everyone to agree with. I’m fine with it. The most important thing is that IMO we needed to expand the playoff and we’re getting it.

That I'll agree with.

At least now when you have the teams like Boise State, UCF, Cincy, Navy, Houston, BYU or whoever is really good in a given year.... at least now they got a seat at the table. And while the schools like Boise State, Cincy, UCF, Houston etc. may not have as tough of schedules... its gonna be that much more important that they win the games they're supposed to win & also win in style or fashion to an extent to make themselves look better than their competitors on the same level.

And they have too look EVEN BETTER if they wanna be one of the Top 4 Conference Champs. Same goes for the Pac 12 & Big 12.... maybe now itll put some urgency into those 2 conferences. Cause 2 of the 3 (most years) are gonna get left out of the Top 4.

And its gonna be interesting to see what ND does going forward. That may be the most intriguing thing of all cause like you said before.... how much do they value the top 4 spots with the Bye & the home game.... rather than possibly having to go on the road in the first or 2nd round.

But I'm also looking forward to see when the first Group of 5 over P5 upset happens in the playoffs. Like the one year Boise State upset Oklahoma in the bowl game a few years back... that got the original playoff talk started.

UCF, Cincy, Houston, BYU will all be P5 in a year. They won’t be part of that G5 automatic bid.

So I saw this guy in Apalachicola at the Piggly Wiggly, and he was wearing an ODU shirt. I told him I went to VCU and assured him we kicked their ass when he was in school there. He sheepishly agreed. But then I cheered him up by saying ,"Hey, your a football school anyway!" LOL

I like @ Newboy's upset pick but I decided not to pull the trigger on that one. No upset pick this week.
