See this is what confuses meMy thoughts on this new 12 team format:
1. The biggest winner in this is the Group of Five conferences. They are now guaranteed a spot in the playoff every year (6 conference champions ranked highest by the committee, with no minimum ranking requirement). Based on these criteria, Cincinnati would have even got a first round bye last year. This makes the move to the Sun Belt by JMU look even better.
2. This might help keep the ACC, PAC 12, and Big 12 from breaking up. With a guaranteed spot in the playoff, there is a little less reason for schools like Clemson and Oregon to switch conferences. It doesn’t get rid of the huge financial gap between those 3 conferences and the SEC/B1G, but it softens the blow a little.
3. Notre Dame has a decision to make. They won’t be eligible for the first round bye because they can’t be one of the 4 highest ranked conference champions. At the same time, they will be playing one less game per year because they don’t have a conference championship game. They have to decide if the possibility of getting the bye is more valuable than the extra week off before the playoff starts. Notre Dame would have gotten in last year as the 6 seed and hosted Utah with the winner going to play at Cincinnati. I think they would have taken that.
Would ND Have been the 6 or would they have been lower?
Are they doing the P5 Conference Champions & the Highest Ranked Group of 5 Conference champion get the Top 6? Or are they gonna take them all and seed them & the 6 at larges based on where they finish in the final standings? Cause that could affect the seedings big time.
If they put the 5 P5 Conf Champs & Highest Group of 5 Conf champ as the top 6 & the At larges after.... the highest ND could be.... is 7 without a conference... so it'd look like this
1. Bama (sec champ)
2. Michigan (Big 10 Champ)
3. Cincy (Group of 5 Champ)
4. Baylor (Big 12 Champ)
------ BYES--------
5. Utah (Pac 12 Champ)
6. Pitt (ACC Champ)
7. Georgia (At Large #1)
8. Notre Dame (At Large #2)
9. Ohio State (At Large #3)
10. Ole Miss (At Large #4)
11. OK State (At Large #5)
12. Michigan State (At Large #6)
If they seed them based on where they finished in the rankings.... It'd Look like this
1. Bama (sec champ)
2. Michigan (Big 10 Champ)
3. Georgia (At Large #1)
4. Cincy (Group of 5 Champ)
------- BYES----------
5. Notre Dame (At Large #2)
6. Ohio State (At Large #3)
7. Baylor (Big 12 Champ)
8. Ole Miss (At Large #4)
9. OK State (At Large #5)
10. Michigan State (At Large #6)
11. Utah (Pac 12 Champ)
12. Pitt (ACC Champ)
