Florida Gulf Coast University held their first class 13 years ago and now has an enrollment around 13K. They already have very nice facilities in place for their althetic progams. This afternoon, I learned that they will be conducting a study to add a college football team. If approved, the university will build a stadium from the ground up at a cost that will likely exceed $100M. Like VCU, FGCU has many of the same issues...land, money, etc, etc. However, I'm willing to bet when this study is complete, FGCU will find a way to make this happen (similar to what USF did several years ago). Why are some universities like FGCU able to accomplish so much, in such a short period of time and other universities like VCU struggle to accomplish the same?

The men's and women's basketball programs at FGCU went division 1 a couple of years ago and play in a very nice on campus arena (Alico Arena 4,500 seats for basketball). Their women's basketball team has done very well in recent years as has their baseball team. In fact, Chris Sale was recently selected with the No. 13 overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2010 MLB Draft.

We have a lot to be proud of at VCU! I can hardly recognize the photos I see online as our campus has grown so much over the past 15 years. However, we still don't have football. I'm hopeful that FGCU will move forward with their pursuit of football. I can't wait to be sitting in their new football stadium a couple of years from now and working on my sun tan in the middle of November.

They're located in a suburban area, not sure they have the same problems with land as VCU does.

You are correct regarding the suburban location...I live minutes from FGCU. I would consider all of Southwest Florida suburban. However, in the video attached above, the president specifically mentions the lack of land on campus for a football stadium and that they are always looking to acquire additional land. Florida is much different than Virginia regarding their use of land. I imagine much of what you saw in the photo you attached is not buildable do to a variety of reasons...watershed issues, protected land (wildlife such as Florida Panthers), etc.

I'll continue to keep you posted as they conduct their study. If successful, perhaps this is something VCU will want to mirror.

Here's some additional pics of their campus...

Hey Mods! It's a spam message. As I placed in my report of the latest message, it's in Russian, but using Google translate it is clearly pushing an "egg diet"

Re: Football coming to FGCU?

The six month long FGCU football feasibility study is complete and was released this afternoon. I have not read the 100 page document but will include a link for those that are interested.

Here's the basics that I gathered from our local news...

To start a Division 1 football team at FGCU from scratch, the following will be required...

$130 - $143M
100 acres of land
An off campus location as not enough land is available on campus
20,000 – 30,000 seat football stadium (I believe 20,000 with the ability to expand to 30,000)

It sounds like FGCU has many of the same issues that VCU has in their quest for football. I will continue to keep you posted as I learn new information.
