The potential is there and I am rooting so hard for him because he has a very Curry-like upside. He just plays so scared and so rushed sometimes. Every time he shoots a three, he launches it either way long or way off target, he just needs to slow it down. The kid can finish well at the rim but even on free throws it just seems like he is so tense, usually rips it off the back rim which kind of proves that. It's frustrating because I think he works extremely hard and I think he does all the right things, it's just going to take time for it to really click for him but playing scared to make a mistake isn't helping anything.
I'll be honest.... I dont see Kern playing scared. Also hes taken 2 3's all season... so Idk what you mean by that. He's not a 3 point shooter. He's clearly a slashing, attacking the rim type of player.

And its hard for someone to become confident & get steady feets under themselves when they're playing limited minutes. Dude busts his @$$ on the court just about every time I've seen him play.... I've also seen him trying to cover someone elses man when they get burned or out of position on defense.

If anything... I'd say he plays a little over zealous more so than he plays scared.

Sure his stats may not WOW you... but the kids got heart, passion & toughness. I'd take this kid on my team any day of the week. But if you wanna see more results outta him.... he needs an increased role on the team.

I don't entirely disagree. I mentioned he's arguably our second best defender, but every time I see him with the ball it seems like he just kind of loses control and plays too fast. Josh Banks had been doing it for a few years and finally this year he slowed the game down and looks way more in control and look at what it's done for him.

I agree that the only way for him to develop is to play him more, but that's such a tricky situation because he replaces someone who can shoot and score better than him. It's just unfortunate because our guard play is so strong with Nunn and Watkins. What I will say though, is Kern has earned and deserves more of Zeb's time.

Like I said, I am rooting for this kid and I also said he has Curry-like potential as an upperclassmen, but we can't miss the forest for the trees and get caught up in what he might be able to do. The bottom line is, in his (very) limited time, he has shown an inability to put the ball in the basket whether that be the field or free throw line honestly. Our starting guards are just too crucial to our offense to be subbing him in for them for significant portions of a game in my opinion. Especially gearing up for conference play.

The first five pages of this thread are a good read. If you came on late you are getting the normal back and forth minutiae from regular posters. The early responses offer honest and heartfelt responses to the questions. Thanks Natty for having the guts to start this.

My first compliment about you as a new poster is that your typing skills are awesome. Your words per minute is impressive.

And also… TLDR

JT’s best season was under Wade.
Not that it really matters at this point, and I am not sure what metric you are using, but statistically his senior year under MR was his best year. Could be due to more minutes. But anyway moot point.

The worst part is that they managed to create a serious local buzz around the program. They had the students back in the building and the Stu was rocking on night 1.

All that goodwill tossed out the window a month into the season.
In line with this, my 16 yr old son angrily says last night “All that hype for nothing”.

I really thought that players seeing Bones come through here and have success in the NBA and then to have Vince drafted back to back years would've really boosted our attractiveness to some higher level recruits. Boy was I wrong.

I don’t really care about going through points 1, 2, and 3 anymore. Mike has to perform a miracle at this point. Otherwise, he needs to just get the f out of town. If Ed can’t figure this out, then he needs to get the f out of town too. This program has been decimated by their mediocrity.
If you are a big donor and are this passionate about Mike, Ed, etc needing to go, then get together with some other big donors who feel the same way and make it happen.

Well, could the NIL money be having an effect on "team ball". It's no longer about the team, it's about the individual. Do you think maybe our players are auditioning? Maybe that is why coaches (not only MR) are finding it harder to "coach". The players are simply not listening to coach. I would think this would especially be true in the higher mid majors. Also, maybe some of the players are not playing as hard so as not to risk injury.
