Players Marcus Santos-Silva announces departure from VCU

VCU forward Marcus Santos-Silva has announced through social media on Monday that he will be transferring from VCU. His departure comes after a recent announcement that he would be entering himself as a NBA draft candidate without an agent. It now appears that he will use his extra year of NCAA eligibility elsewhere.
In a post on his Instagram account, he said “My decision has nothing to do with the team or coaches, they’re always going to be family to me” … “I’m just doing what I feel is the best option and decision for my future.”
Santos-Silva was VCU’s leading scorer last season (18-13) where he averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
VCU announced yesterday an addition to the roster with the landing of 7’1 transfer Brendan Medley-Bacon, you can read about him here. Unless he is waived, Medley-Bacon would have to sit out 1...

Obviously a huge loss - was poised for a huge senior season, was going to be his team too. Knowing nothing, I think he may have gotten some feedback he didn't like from the draft, maybe even something about going up against better competition. Add in some people in his ear and perhaps that's how he got to this conclusion.

I've seen two separate mentions of UCF which if true makes this quite the puzzling move. I would assume it'd be for a Power 5 school. We'll see. Big loss though.

Yeah. Playing the national player of the year in conference just ain’t gonna do it.

Maybe make an all conference team in this weak ass league before moving on

It seems obvious that he was part of the chemistry problem that plagued this team.

I stated the same thing when he declared for the draft and posters on these boards jumped on me. I was told that I didn't understand the current process and why so many kids were declaring for the draft, but retaining their eligibility. I also pointed out what I thought MSS's deficiencies were, and why he was not NBA material and was basically told by posters on these boards MSS should be able to test the waters in an effort to fulfill his dreams. :roll:

N Mollen, I do as well. Just posted, I think he is a great Mid Major big. However, I just dont see him making the leap to a solid Major and doing better than he could at VCU.

Most of those guys (MM's who jump to High Major) are long, lean, fast bouncy guys. That's not MSS. He is a back to the basket go hard for the rebound old school (See Maurice Lucas) in the paint Power Forward.

While I dont see this a good move. Unlike Wolfpack, I think this move has no bearing on his ability to test the NBA waters especially if the NBA is open to his testing the waters. Also, dont see as a problem a kid testing the waters as I think its a positive experience.

As you state oh well. I will add that I wish him well.

Ha! I had no problem with him "testing the waters." That's what the process is for. I do agree with you that it seems very unlikely he would be encouraged to stay in the process (and that is how things apparently worked out). I think Marcus has a pro career ahead of him; I just don't see how this helps him along that road
