VOLLEYBALL PLAYER TO WATCH:
KRISTIN BOYD

RICHMOND, Va. - Kristin Boyd was better than ever in 2011, arguably VCU's best player, but it's hard to tell her that now.
For the second time in three years, Boyd watched as a conference title and NCAA bid slip away in heartbreaking fashion in November. She's determined not to let it happen again.

Boyd was a freshman in 2009 when the Rams won the first two sets of a best-of-five Colonial Athletic Association championship match, at home, against George Mason, only to watch the Patriots rally for the victory. Last season, the Rams reached the final against host Delaware. VCU appeared poised to spring the upset after storming to a 2-1 advantage, but with a raucous home crowd behind them, the Blue Hens came from behind for a 3-2 win.

Boyd spiked 14 kills against Delaware in last year's CAA Championship Match, but hit .075 and committed 11 attacking errors. It's a performance that has haunted her since November.

"Last year was hard for me because I didn't play well," Boyd said. "I probably played one of the worst games I had all season."

2012 VCU VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW
RICHMOND, Va. – James Finley knows his VCU Volleyball team can't do anything about their past near-misses, but they can use them to affect the outcome of the Rams' inaugural Atlantic 10 Conference campaign.
VCU has reached the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Match twice in the last three years, but saw George Mason and Delaware win the crown in 2009 and 2011, respectively. The Rams were a set away from victory both times, and the sting of those losses has been slow to fade.

SAMADAN PUSHES VCU PAST BALL STATE 3-1

ball-state-0825.jpg

Getting a win like this after we beat Illinois State yesterday was great. The thing is, when the selection committee is trying to decide on an at-large, you need these kind of big wins. To get one opening weekend is fantastic."

"We did some things really not well, but after we got into the second set, we relaxed and really started to play some great defense. Sami [Blaze] and [Amanda] Love did a great job of just cleaning the floor."

WHAT'S NEXT:
VCU concludes action at the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge Saturday evening at 4:30 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.

QUOTABLE
"Amanda Love did a great job of keeping the intensity up. She was a game-changer for us. Martina [Samadan] and Jasmine [Waters] both did an outstanding job and really scored for us when we had to have a kill to be able to finish the match, so it was really, really nice."

--Head coach James Finley

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Rams travel to the N.C. State Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in Raleigh, N.C. VCU will open with Kent State on Friday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. The Rams will also take on the host Wolfpack and South Florida.
