WINS OVER UNCW AND GEORGETOWN CAP OFF PERFECT 4-0 WEEKEND FOR RAMS

RICHMOND, Va. – Prior to the annual 4x1 Invitational, Head Coach Paul Kostin sat down with VCUathletics.com to talk about the upcoming tennis season for previews that will run this week. During that talk, Kostin talked about the depth and balance that the women's team has with eight different girls that can all help the Rams win.

That depth and balance was on display right from the start as the Black & Gold capped off a perfect 4-0 weekend with wins over UNCW and Georgetown at the 4x1 Invitational.

WakeWTEWin-Main.jpg

RICHMOND, Va.—No matter what sport, you always want a statement win. VCU made that statement when they took down a member of the ACC in Wake Forest, winning 4-3.

The Rams saw nothing but success in doubles action on Sunday. Alena Gerasimova and Salome Kvitashvili started the day with a big 8-3 victory over Wake Forest's Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman.

VCU clinched the doubles point when Ana Bara and Alex Bara defeated Kayla Duncan and Rebecca Siegler 8-5. The duo of Josefin Hjertquist and Daria Yakauleva won by default.

A default to give Salome Kvitashvili the win started the Rams off with a point in singles action. Olga Terteac gave the Rams another point with her victory at the fourth position, dispatching her opponent in two sets as she won 6-2, 6-4.

Not to be outdone, Gerasimova followed suit with a victory in two sets at the fifth position, 6-2, 6-3, clinching the day's win for the Rams.

KOSTIN TAKES HOME SECOND STRAIGHT MAPTA COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR HONOR
MAPTACoachoftheYear2012-Main.jpg

RICHMOND, Va. – In the past 22 years, Virginia Commonwealth University has changed in so many ways. The athletics department has followed suit with new faces, new additions and a brand that continues to grow each day.

One thing that has been a constant over that stretch has been VCU Tennis Head Coach Paul Kostin. Not only is Kostin the longest tenured coach with the Rams, he's also done the same thing each year, win and win some more.

Last year was no different with the men's and women's squads combining for a 44-14 record and both earned trips to the NCAA Tournament yet again. For his accomplishments, Kostin was named the Mid-Atlantic Professional Tennis Association's College Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

"All the awards are nice, but it's really a credit to the people that have been around me for all these years," Kostin said. "The only thing I'm really focused on is to continue winning, that's all I want to do."

It is the third time in the past four years that Kostin has taken home the accolade
