It was incidental contact. Happens all the time. You'd think by JJ's reaction that he got shot in the head. He should have gotten an Oscar for the backwards flop. It was most definitely a common foul though and the refs did the make up as soon as they could.
The face is a very sensitive area, and he got hit square into it. His reaction wasn't really unnatural especially if an eye was affected.

It was a bang-bang play (pun intended). There was no harm by the DC player, just going hard after the ball and JJ zigged and got zagged. Refs should have called it, actually can’t believe they missed that one so bad. That said, it would have been a really, really soft flagrant—even by the strictest interpretation of the rule. As a VCU fan I’d have been ok getting that in our favor, as it would have made up for the myriad of moving back screens that went on the whole game by them (about as cheap a move one can do outside of biting, kicking or scratching); but I can appreciate why they didn’t pull the flagrant card for that. The call on Nick was an equally egregious miss by the stripes, that one and not calling the screens more closely should cost them.
Davidson in particular does that constantly with moving screens and it drives me nuts they don't get called for it.

The first time Davidson got called for it, I told my buddy..."MR must have gotten in the ref's ear"

Also, for all the people extolling the many ills of the VCU basketball program?? Look no further than Davidson for how mid major programs can quickly vanish after a coaching change.
Does the Davidson board have any threads about attendance? If not, maybe they should :lol:

Early returns are not good--but they lost a lot from last year's team..........I think most agree with the roster he had MR gets a mulligan the first year.

Davidson is a 2,500 liberal arts school with a small alumni base in a town similar to Ashland. Comparing their attendance to us with hundred some thousand alumni in the Richmond area is apples and oranges.

Davidson is barely sniffing 2000 students. Their current enrollment is 1927. I haven't visited Ashland in a while, but I think Davidson NC is a bit more upscale than Ashland.

I've watched the play now two dozen times, thanks to MistaChill's replay. JJ comes down with the rebound and starts to crouch to dissuade any players from grabbing at the ball. The Davidson defender makes a quick move to punch at the ball to knock it loose.

It's a basketball move, I've done it myself. Not a flagrant 1 by the current rulebook. It isn't fair but the referees missed it. They gave us a makeup call the next time they could. I don't blame DeLoach for being upset either, they should've called the common foul for contact.
"The Davidson defender makes a quick move to punch at the ball to knock it loose. " --> The hand is not close to the Ball which JD has around his waist. There is at least 2 feet from his closed hand to the ball. Watch it again and stop it when his hand hits JD's face. Look where the ball is. It was not an attempt punch the ball lose.

Yes. Zeb can slam it with style. I remembered that @rollins77 posted team vertical measurements a week or so ago. Zeb has the 2nd best vertical on the team. Here is Rollins' post......

Top four max verticals on the team, measured in the fall:

Tobi - 45"
Zeb - 44"
Nick - 43 1/2"
Jayden 40 1/2"
Those and a few other measurables are in our game notes, FYI.

Like I said, I've watched the play now 20+ times. I also downloaded the 2022-2023 NCAA rulebook to look it over. I think the 3 referees got it right (hard for me to say that since I'm always critical of them). They're hamstrung on what they can call after a replay. The DC player did a quick jab at the ball, all in a half second, going frame by frame to prove intent doesn't work.

The result was a fist/hand hitting DeLoach's face. As the rulebook states, while the result may be excessive, if the play itself was a common basketball play, it isn't a flagrant 1. Jabbing quickly at the ball once as a defender is common.

It's clear you don't agree with the referees or me, so no real point in continuing this. Enjoy your weekend and hope the Rams win tomorrow night.

Let me put it this way.
A Dayton fan complains about the placement of our pep band and we have to move the pep band two sections over from where they were.

But the conference has no problem with that display on national television.
I would think that Davidson being a religious affiliated school (Presbyterian) there might be some questions asked about this. I guess they are Presbyterian the same way UR is Baptist.

I have not questioned that it was a flagrant foul. I am stating that there is no way he was trying to punch the ball loose. There is 2-3 feet between the hand and ball the video clearly shows that. - We need to get St. louis in foul trouble, it does not appear their bench is deep. We have to do better from 3 too. Have a good day.
