The fact that GM played St. Louis so well @SL this season (only to allow SL to score the last 9 pts. of the game to win by 1)) makes me feel they can rise to the occasion. As mentioned, if we play to our potential we should prevail , barring any weird circumstances. Don't want to appear over confident or such but we seem to be gelling. Oduro will warrant special attention , naturally. He dropped 26 , I believe , on St. Louis , but that was then and this is now. All about matchups it would seem. GO RAMS!!Not gonna lie I'm nervous for this one. GMU seems to have a knack for knocking VCU down a peg or two when we are on a roll. We obviously cannot afford to lose this game under any circumstances.
It my understanding that GMU has struggled with guard play which leans heavily in our favour. However, they have some killer bigs particularly Oduro who we will have to devote a lot of attention to. GMU's defensive ratings are pretty low but they seem to have high offensive ratings. This will be an interesting match-up.
I am curious @duncanlamb , as a fan of both VCU and GMU, how do you think Coach English will game plan for us? Or what do you think GMU will have to do well to beat us?
Well put.Let’s make the Patriots wish they were doing a colonoscopy prep instead of playing the VCU Rams at the STU.
I won't be able to view the game for about the first 1 1/3 of play due to Wed. nite Bible study so should I pray for victory? I suppose I could but IBummer. Won't be able to watch on ESPN+ tonight due to business meal. I'm not at all happy about it. I'd like to watch the replay, but have no idea if it will even be up...
I watched gmu v uri. uri got Oduro in foul trouble ( 2 in the first half). With gmu up 10, english took oduro out. uri immediately tied it up and english had to put him back. gmu immediately went back up 7. So, I wouldn't say Oduro's back up is anything special. The bench battle is really 2 components: Bigs and Guards.
Mason has been running their offense thru Oduro since Kim English took over. The problem is you could literally stop Mason offense by getting him in foul trouble and forcing them to play small become a dribble drive/jump shooting team with no continuity, no rim protection or rebounding. This year, Mason has two very capable bigs which allow them to continue to play inside out when Oduro goes to the bench..combined with fact VCU has a shorter front line bench than last year..it's about even.
The backcourt is a different story, Mason had a veteran team of pg's last year. Not so much this year. The 2 guards who take over when Polite goes the bench are a freshman and midmajor transfer still getting acclimated to the A10. They can be turned over. Advantage VCU.

Play VCU defense, turn them over, wear them down - just like the ur game but the margin would be closer (not counting the last minute).
GO RAMS!!!!
We have a variety of guys that can work Oduro over all with 5 fouls to give. I'm not worried about him. He's not going to back Johns or Shriver back into the lane. I say give him a big dose of the brick wall that is Shriver.I watched gmu v uri. uri got Oduro in foul trouble ( 2 in the first half). That is not the road toward victory tonight, if we end up in that situation it will be a struggle. JDL and Johns need to be very disciplined and everyone needs to rebound. This also will be as much about guarding their threes and making our ownWe have a variety of guys that can work Oduro over all with 5 fouls to give. I'm not worried about him. My thought is that if our big guys can limit Oduro to an acceptable level without needing doubles that our G/W can handle their guards. Make Oduro work his arse off for anything he gets. As you said we absolutely cannot give up O boards to them. That is what typically kills us.That is not the road toward victory tonight, if we end up in that situation it will be a struggle. As always, just win !
