I was born in '92 so I wasn't alive, but my brother who was born in '80 always talks about how VCU played a *home* game vs Jacksonville at The Robins Center when he was a kid. I know future NBA Slam Dunk champ Dee Brown was on that team. Does anyone remember this game? I believe my brother said there was an ice issue at RC, similar to the UVA-Sparty fiasco in the early 2000s.

I don't specifically remember the rescheduled game, but VCU did play Jacksonville at the Robins Center February 6, 1988. I do remember the game that was cancelled, though. It was cancelled due to the Coliseum staff waxing the floor with the wrong type of wax, making the floor slippery as ice. They cancelled the game because the players were slipping all over the place during warmups. After the game, they had to strip the wax from the floor and re-apply the correct wax before VCU could play another home game.

Jacksonville was the first Sun Belt Conference game ever played by VCU in December 1979. It was a home game at the Coliseum, and the ONLY game where VCU/Coliseum sold beer that you could take to your seat. VCU lost 65-63 to Jacksonville in that game. It was J.D. Barnett's first season at VCU. VCU ended up winning the Sun Belt Conference tournament in their first year in the conference that year and also went to their first NCAA Tournament where they lost to Iowa 86-72 in Greensboro, NC.

J.D. Barnett took VCU to the NCAA Tournament 5 out of 6 years he was at VCU. His NCAA record at VCU was 4-5.

The J.D. Barnett years and the Shaka Smart years were clearly the best years in the history of VCU men's basketball. Between Barnett and Smart, both coaches accounted for 10 of VCU's 18 NCAA Tournament appearances.

FYI. J.D. Barnett and Shaka Smart also account for 11 out of VCU's 13 NCAA Tournament wins. Anthony Grant (2007 vs. Duke) and Will Wade (2016 vs. Oregon State) are the only other VCU coaches to win an NCAA Tournament game for VCU.

Jeff Capel was NOT the coach of VCU when we beat Duke.

You are forgetting the dagger in Buffalo (Grant not Capel).

I was at that game. J.D. called three timeouts (3) before the final play - a length of court pass that was well orchestrated but didn't quite work. Here's another thing about the 79-80 schedule - no "buy games." I guess VCU couldn't afford them then. That needs to be taken into account when comparting records then to now.

That Jacksonville team we lost to in 79 was coached by former NBA Coach Tates Locke and led by James Ray, who was the 5th overall pick (Denver) in the 1980 NBA draft.
