Interesting box score from their game last night at GooMoos:
-how bad is Mason losing like that at home?
-almost all pts by URI were by the guards
-guard Dowtin and Fats like we did Sherrod and Gilyard And we should have a good chance URI is offensively challenged
-Team effort with many contributions will get better as well the job done.
Loved seeing the passing and movement to the basket. URI is a very physical and a defensive team, so Coaches should have an answer for them this time. Need this game
RI is a different animal than UR. The are collectively just bigger stronger faster at guard/wing than VCU or UR. It’s a tough match up. I think most teams and coaches come into these games knowing what they have to do, it’s only basketball. Some nights you can execute, some you don’t. If we played them in 7 game series would we get swept? No. Would we win? doubt it.

We all know they have had our number lately but even the last game at the Stu we had a chance to get a good lead early and we just couldn't score. They can def play bully ball and play great defense but if we can get a good lead early, think we can finally break this streak. Here is to hoping what we saw against Richmond(not many 4-5min droughts and a strong start to the second half) and we can do this. Time to get that revenge!

No doubt they are a tough matchup, but not sure we don’t take the 7 game series, if we can get our minds right. I think the first game was a combination of them being in our head and our guys just not being ready to play. Every single player except Douglas posted an O-rating significantly below avg—definitely give them credit on the defensive end, but for the entire enterprise to be that bad??? Sometimes you just have a really bad game at the wrong time.

That game was one possession late and they got four ORs on a possession, at least two of which were just “hand of god” types. We pretty much shrank after that (btw we had more ORs than them for the game). If just two of our top seven played at their avg, pick any two, we’d have likely won.

My take it is more mental from players to staff than an actual difference on the floor—this staff is 1-5 and the only time there was a distinct difference in talent was the first year.

You can bet Rhode Island is going to play "bully ball" Friday night, just like they did earlier this year at the Stu. VCU is not built for "bully ball". VCU needs to find a way to play much tougher this game.

Agree that we have to play tougher than we did and i think being mentally tough is the key. This isn’t Hurley’s URI team though, they run through Dowtin, Fats and to some extent Tyrese Martin. Dowtin doesn’t bully anyone, but he is mentally strong and cold as ice when it counts. Martin is a problem for us, not sure we have a great match-up for him. We did a decent job on Fats, we have guys that match up well there.

Last game was more about us than them. Take away that one possession where they got four ORs and we out rebounded them, nearly doubling them on ORs. We didn’t play with any composure, guys were rushing shots, we missed at least three # on 1 transitions and probably five or six more at the rim. If the team approaches this as a business trip and stays on plan—we win by 5+.

Martin is a terrible matchup. Dowtin is more physical than any of our guards/wings. Fatts is tough. Rushed shots are a product of them getting at us physically, that’s what happens, we never get comfortable.

Let’s see. RI doesn’t shoot that well. They are bigger and more physical. They penetrate well against us. There is a secret weapon that highly successful college coaches use it these circumstances. They call it a Z-O-N-E defense.

hey after some of the lineups we saw last game that we had never seen before, wouldn’t be surprised if the staff has some “easter eggs” in store for URI.

Maybe some different defensive looks, biggest concern with going zone is we already have a bit of a problem giving up ORs and that can be one of the downsides.

I just hope VCU does a better job guarding the front porch, especially when trapping. Gave away too many easy baskets after traps the last time. If it means 2 bigs so be it.
