The VCU Rams 2022-23 Season Thread

He actually didn’t start his collegiate playing career at Hartford, he played one season in 2021-2022 there. He played his first 3 years of collegiate basketball at Anderson Broaddus University which is a Division II school.

Which further proves my point. Maybe he's stepped up too high in weight class coming to VCU.

You may be right but it’s been 6 games and I liked what I saw in the first 4 games, though he’s been disappointing in the Memphis and KS games.

And the competition is only going to get tougher the next two games and then again come January. Through 6 games, Shriver is shooting 28.6% from three. He's scored in double figures only once (11 points), and that was against Morgan State. In his last 4 games, he is shooting 22.7% (5-22) from three.

I think he is a 3pt. specialist who is good for 5-10 minutes a game.

Not knocking on him at all.

The lack of double figure scoring doesn’t really concern me because I don’t think he was brought here to do that. He was brought here to hit the 3 ball and it’s obvious that he’s on a cold streak. Hopefully he can get it going soon. I’ve liked a lot of his looks thus far though I didn’t watch the Memphis game because of lack of internet at that time so I can’t speak on that game.

Memphis ran him off of the three point line. Shriver is a set shooter and needs space to set his feet and get his shot off. Memphis completely took that away from him. Pretty sure other schools are also going to figure out what Memphis did to lock him down. It's not rocket science.

Shriver is turning out to not the the three point assassin he was billed to be. I guess there's a reason he started his collegiate playing career at Hartford. ;):roll:
Too early to say. He’s 1 of his last 12. Prior to that he was 9-23. That’s 39%, which I’ll take. He’s in a slump. I’ve seen lots of good shooters (Troy Daniels, as an example) go through slumps.

I think where he struggles most is on defense. He’s not fleet of foot, and it shows. At the top of the press, he is mostly a liability.

I was in Memphis at the game. They didn’t run him off the line as much as bully him all game. He was 0-7 from three, so he got shots off, but many of them weren’t in rhythm and his feet weren’t balanced as he shot. They were very physical with him, and they really didn’t help off of him. He’s not quick enough to pump fake and drive against a team like Memphis. That’s why we need our guards and bigs to hit him off of screens and when playing inside out to get him open looks. Then it’s up to him to shoot in rhythm and on balance.

when the ball goes inside it is much more likely to be turned over than to be kicked out…so far

I think we are saying the same thing. You state that he was bullied by Memphis and I stated he was run off of the three point line. In essence, Memphis did not allow Shriver the time to set his feet and time to shoot. Yes, they were physical with him, and pushed him off of the three point line not allowing him to get a set shot. As I stated earlier, other schools will figure that out and play the same type defense against him. At the end of the day, the A-10 is much tougher competition than the America East or DII basketball. What worked for Shriver at lower levels may very well not work at the level his is at now.

He has good size and nice looking shot.I think he will adjust. There are going to be games we will need the 3 ball to bring us back in it. we have 1 year with the kid so I am ok with giving him floor time and letting him adjust to this higher level of play. This was a risk. But I trust MR instincts bc MR was a shooter. . If we get into January and he still hasnt brought his averages up, then maybe reconsider his playing time.
