The VCU Rams 2022-23 Season Thread

In my opinion his deepest team ever was the 2019-20 team that flopped due to poor combos, upper classman favoritism & injuries.
Just saying :D This team is deep to a certain extent. Personally I would go about 8 deep.
I wanted to ask earlier. 8 with Ace and Watkins, or 8 without them?

February 2019 into early March 2019 Marcus Evans was a VERY good individual stretch of basketball for a VCU player. Dude was nails and made the big shot at Dayton and absolutely embarrassed Mason on their senior night on his way to an A10 First Team nomination.

But yes, he never looked 100% in 2019-2020.

He was also coming off his first Achilles tear at the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

That game at Dayton is still one of my favorite experiences. Up like 20 and crowd was stunned. Blew the lead and then Evans silenced them. My friend and I have a picture with my flag with the score and mid court in the background that a Dayton fan took of us. The Dayton fans then invited us out for some beers.

No PG is sitting behind another player for a few years. They will transfer after a year.
Then why on Earth were we so hot and heavy for a couple of four-star freshmen point guards this year? Like I said in my original post, my thought was a two/three star guy who needed some seasoning but could hopefully take over the starting job after Ace leaves. Are you not supposed to recruit freshman players anymore?

Because those recruits would be playing major mins likely alongside Ace. No 4 star is coming here to sit on the bench. I guarantee you Rhoades wouldn’t even suggest that when talking to them.

And, in this scenario, you're risking ticking off Ace because he's not getting his usual 30-35 minutes per game, and he might transfer out to get more time. Honestly, I don't think you can take the possibility of transfer into account when recruiting. You'll drive yourself crazy.

This is encouraging and makes sense. It seems these comments, combined with our size, would translate into a strong rebounding team. It feels to me (haven’t seen equivalent rebounding numbers) that we’re an average rebounding team?

According to Team Rankings, we're ranked 234th in total team rebounding rate.

2019-2020271st
2018-2019130th

Of note, we were top 100 in both of Wade's seasons, and anywhere from the 90s to 240s in the Shaka era.

Not too surprising we were top 100 or close to it while Tillman was here.

I recall we played more inside out during Wade years.

So I am not gonna lie, been pretty concerned and critical about our squad for awhile, but I am starting to feel a little optimism about this team.

The defense is holding teams to about 60 and we are drawing fouls almost more than any team in the nation. We got 2 losses. A close one to a better than thought ASU and a stomping by a really good team in thier home opener. Ace didn't play in either loss.

Ace. He hasn't even begun to peak this year. He might not score more than he did against Vandy, but he is going to have way more. Etter moments on the horizon. I know it was thrown around as an excuse him not playing, but god darn man he changes everything.

Jamir and Nunn. Watkins has been solid, but you can really tell he is rusty and getting back into the flow. I think he will have a huge break out game at som point this season and will be unstoppable thereafter. And we just watched Nunn drop 24 other night. So we know he is capable. He just hasn't been consistent which is understandable having to assume Ace's role.

So I feel we are about to reel off a really long win streak. The A10 doesn't look nearly as tough this year as we believed. We got a pretty good shot to win this league, make the tourney, and have a shot at making some noise.

The FT rate is huge if were are holding teams to 60, because it negates a lot of our offensive struggles and also puts tremendous pressure on the opposing team.

If we only need 61 to win and shoot 30 fts we don't need a lot of offense to win, especially if we are turning other team over.

But making them is another thing entirely. And we seriously need to cut our turnovers to be at our best.

Yes, getting to the line isn’t our problem. Making FTs is the problem, especially front end of a 1-and-1.
