So... does that mean we could potentially get Simms, DJ, Evans, Crowfield and Vann back if they wanted to play? That would be some crazy poop.

Honestly this whole thing makes no sense. It also would give some teams an enormous advantage -- a 18 person roster vs 13, in the age of Covid, would be decidedly an advantage if kids start testing positive.

Also, imagine if you were a freshman or soph on this year's team and Simms, DJ, Evans, Crowfield and/or Vann walked back in the gym. Might cause a real revolt

No you have to play this season to get the extra year. This does create some interesting scenarios around recruiting. Hypothetically let’s say Levi or Corey has a monster year and we don’t get a stud big. Do we keep them another year? one of the biggest questions i see around grad transfers is how do you get a masters in 1 year. Does MSS play two years at TTech? This changes quite a few things

How many current/previous grad transfers actually get graduate degrees? These kids are just "hanging out" in grad school until their eligibility expires.

I 100% agree. Part of it is they are hanging out and part of it is only 1 year is paid. Based on the statement from the council, that shouldn't be an issue for currently enrolled students playing basketball. Instead for 5 to complete 4, this rule will give them 6 to complete 5

Winter sport student-athletes who compete during 2020-21 in Division I will receive both an additional season of competition and an additional year in which to complete it, the Division I Council decided.

Sounds like to me the NCAA is hedging their bets in case they can't pull off a complete season of basketball.

Xavier Johnson, point guard from Pitt, is entering the transfer portal. 14.2 points per game, local kid from Woodbridge and Bishop O’Connell HS, (WCAC). Don’t know if their will be any interest from coach or even if we have a shot. We need a point guard to fill Tre’s spot.

I also see the need got PG depth...but whomever comes in is going to have to accept the fact that Ace is one of the team leaders...regardless of his underclassmen status...and they're (probably) not gonna be getting 30+ minutes a game. I'm sure there are guys out there that will fit the bill, but it'll have to be a guy who's OK coming off the bench.

Do we really want him?

"Johnson had been the target of Capel’s ire and frustration in recent weeks when he received technical fouls against Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and N.C. State. During that stretch, he began two games on the bench, including the Virginia Tech game Feb. 3 when he scored a career-high 32 points, a record for a Pitt reserve.

But Capel seemed out of answers when he spoke to reporters after the N.C. State game — a one-point loss Feb. 17 — when Johnson received a technical for shouting at the Wolfpack bench after hitting a 3-pointer.

“Nothing I’ve said has worked,” Capel said at the time. “I’ve been telling him for 2½ years. Stop talking to the refs. Stop being demonstrative. Nothing we’ve said has worked.”

Johnson, who has started 81 of 84 games for Pitt, also leads the team with 59 turnovers this season, giving him 302 for his career. But Pitt will miss his ability to disrupt the opposing offense. He leads the Panthers with 23 steals for a career total of 124.".

Last thing we need is a cancer on the bench.

moot point, imo.....gut like that would probably not accept a limited/bench role

kind of a "nothing to see here" kind of situation....he'll go to some crap P5 team and try to play in Europe...like everybody else who isn'y NBA bound

Looks like a myriad of issues...this is year 3 of Capel at Pitt

from the article...
• Capel has no recruits secured for 2021 or 2022. My colleague Craig Meyer tells me Pitt is the only ACC team without one for ’21 and that 91 of the top 100 recruits in the country are either signed or committed.

• Champagnie might head to the NBA, where some have him ranked among the top 25 prospects.

• Capel’s highest-rated recruit from the 2020 class, John Hugley, is indefinitely suspended while facing three felony charges related to a car theft last summer,

• The Panthers were crumbling down the stretch for the third consecutive season even with Toney and Johnson. They're 1-7 since the Duke game.

There are deeper issues at Pitt then Johnson. Also as a coach you should never publicly comment on issues like this with a player. If I was Johnson, I would leave too. Don't throw players under the bus in public. Always handle issues like this behind closed doors.
