man that loss is totally unacceptable. I love Coach Rhoades and think he gives us the best shot at some sort of longevity at the coaching position, but if this is how he coaches one of the more talented teams we've had in a long time (preseason top-25, projected A-10 winner) makes me question whether the stability at the coaching position is worth it. To see what Dayton and Grant have done this year and then look at us and our season is disheartening and flat out infuriating. I was sooooo excited about this team and this season and have been let down immensely, and last night was just too much. That should NEVER have happened, trap game, injuries, etc. That loss was unacceptable and profoundly damaging to our tournament chances and our season/coaching has me very worried about tranfers, losing commits, and future recruits. I know im a glass half empty, pessimist, so this is probably more doom-and-gloom than necessary but at the moment it is very hard to contain the frustration and worry. But at the end of the day I really hope Im wrong and Coach gets things right and is here for a long, successful, career so here's to pouring some more beer in that half empty glass...

It’s 2020 and it’s college athletics. Nothing is a sure thing. It’s not as much about VCU, but more about the state of college hoops. There’s always a chance a player on any team could have an old AAU coach who knows an assistant at _______ school and they are really on to that certain player.

Alert: I have zero knowledge of any VCU players wanting to transfer, I am more just pointing out a college athletics (specially college basketball) fact.
That’s a fair assessment

There go your NCAA bid just like that...…..Rhodes is underachieving for a million dollar coach imo. A10 first team (Evans ), Honorable mention A10 (Jenkins), and Silva (top 4 player in A10 this yr)…..Mason dominate you at home, even though the score looks respectable. News flash...Next year team wont have all of these pieces! Long road ahead for VCU basketball. The Rhodes fan club can continue to hype him but he's an avg at best head coach. Richmond is licking their chops right now. The Spiders are getting better while VCU regressing ...no way anybody confident in VCU winning the next 2 games/getting an at large bid! 1 NCAA appearance in his career for a reason! The next few rebuild years for VCU basketball will be brutal unless Briante ,Mo, Daniels and Maynor comeback lol
Blah, blah, blah. Why do you only show up after a loss? I should thank you, as reading your posts is a great cure for insomnia.

People complain about the lack of hustle, intensity, rebounding...
How hard would you compete at anything if you knew that regardless of performance, effort, results or hustle there would be no changes to bettering your position on the team (starting line-up) or playing time. This is a horrible culture we have built this year and it is totally on MR. It is mind boggling.

ahh Socialist Basketball

Haven’t got any height (MSS is game, but short and limited) and haven’t got any shooters (that coach will put on the floor).

No vision in recruiting and no identity on the floor.

3 years in and the ship be sinking. But it’s a whole lot easier to tow her in than raise her off the bottom. Best be prepared to make a quick decision...
Stop with the drama.

Off the court, these are a great group of kids. And the on court performance is on the coach. There's no excuse for a team this talented to make the NIT. None. Total failure on the part of Mike Rhoades to recognize that Deuce is playing on two bad knees and still starting him over perhaps the best freshman in VCU history (which is another debate for another day). Total failure to not make in game adjustments. Total failure to right the ship when there was clearly something wrong after the Florida tournament.

I can understand missing the tournament in 2018 after what Will Wade left us. But to not get NCAA level production out of this group should warrant a performance review plan for MR in the off-season.
I respect what you’re saying. However, the on-court performance is also on the kids. This is not meant as a challenge, but just an observation: if you’ve ever played sports, then you know that the players have to execute what the coach draws up. True story: I’ll never forget late in a game with my team up 1. The coach told us exactly what was coming, if we do as he instructed in the huddle, 15 seconds before, then we would have been in a position to stop them and win. our opponent ran exactly what Coach said they would. Unfortunately, a couple of us, including me, got out of position and didn’t communicate on the floor. We lost on basically an uncontested layup. The coach must take responsibility for having us on the floor, but he has to trust that we’ll make the right play that he just instructed us to make. The reality is the loss that night was on my teammates and me for not doing as were instructed.

Yeah, I get it. I don't know why, but Rhoades just seems insanely loyal to Evans and Vann. It's been the same story all season. They have been the two players who have most underperformed (for whatever reason/reasons that aren't being communicated to the fans in depth). It's frustrating Rhoades hasn't subbed them out more, but I think he truly believes they will show up and be the players he knows they can be. It's almost like he's scared to let THEM down. That's definitely a coaching flaw, but I don't think it's a flaw that deserves us completely ignoring losing only two games in the conference last season and him being A10 coach of the year.

I truly think once this senior class is gone, things will get a big, big refresh. It's crazy, but that senior group seems to be weighing us down. I don't believe it's totally right to pin that all on Rhoades. At the end of the day, they're either going to make their shots or not. He knows they CAN do it.

Bones missed a lot tonight too. He's awesome, but he's not flawless. Rhoades could have subbed earlier tonight and more often in general, but if Bones misses his shots too, we still lose. That's not always on coach.
The 2nd unit was in when Mason made their 1st half run, which I think was a key to the game. We were up 4 and have talked about stepping on people’s throats. This is a point against a bad team at home where we could have taken their heart. If we get up 10 to 12, then I think they may fold. Instead, the 2nd unit comes in, with Ward, and proceeds to give up a big run which put Mason up 8. Yes, we fought back to take the halftime lead, but from that point on, I knew it would be a fight because. As on had hope. If you jump on a bad team early, then you take their hope away. It is why UR blitzed LaSalle on the road last night. UR jumped on them early, had a 14 point lead at half and took away LaSalle’s hope.

You don't win games by simply stepping on the court. This was as bad as it gets. Bad rebounding, horrible stretches of non scoring, November like play.
Rebounding is effort. At halftime they had doubled us up on rebounds. I turned to my friend and said, “Right now they want it more. They are playing harder than we are. If that doesn’t change, then we’ll be in trouble.”

Rebounds and 50/50 balls generally tell you who is playing harder. One would expect a smaller team to be outrebounded, but not doubled up.

And you can't make someone else want it--coach can't take care of that piece, I don't think.

Guys, MR coached a defense that held Mason to 36 points LAST YEAR , and it's insane to give up on him as a head coach.

This is one of Rhoades best teams ever as a head coach....No way this team should be middle of the pack and NIT bound...

This team has a lot of weaknesses.

Little size, physicality, or rebounding.

Not a great shooting team.

Best, maybe only PG is a freshman.

DJ and Vann play a lot together and neither provide ball handling or any inside presence. Team is wing heavy, which isn’t bad, but those wings don’t provide enough of a cross section of roles.

Don’t have a leader in the backcourt. Bones is a freshman. Folks wanted Evans to fill that role, but he is to emotional and whiny, has always been a ball hogging turnover machine, and is now apparently gimpy.

A coach who doesn’t appear to adapt to the players we have. To rigid in his approach.

...presto, the present situation.

You suck as a poster. You only come here when there's a loss. Go hump the leg of some other sports site.

Don't be mad at me, be mad at your head coach for not stopping the bleeding during the 16-0 run, which sealed the game for Mason (a TEAM THAT'S 11th in the A-10!) lol a Mason "who notched their third win in Atlantic-10 play."

"George Mason utilized a 16-0 run over the course of five minutes to take a commanding 17-point lead with 6:32 remaining. The stretch effectively put the game away for the visiting Patriots, who notched their third win in Atlantic-10 play."- The Commonwealth Times
