For the second game in a row, VCU (17-6; 10-4 A10) was without the services of leading scorer, Bones Hyland, and KeShawn Curry—usually the first reserve off the bench.
Adding to the Rams abbreviated roster, Vince Williams left the game with just under 10 minutes left to play after an apparent ankle roll. He would not return.
A three-pointer from Williams at the 11:31 mark in the second half gave the Rams a one point advantage, but a Kellan Grady three on the other end would be the go-ahead bucket for the Wildcats.
VCU wouldn’t get closer than a single possession for the remainder of the game.
Despite winning the rebounding battle, 37-26, VCU was only able to hit on 37% of their shots; while the Wildcats connected on 49% at home.
Jamir Watkins notched his first career double-double for the Rams as he had a team high 14 points.
He split the game-high for rebounds with teammate, Hason Ward—they both grabbed 10 boards a piece.
