Players 2023-24 Roster Thread

Not VCU news but Tyler Burton just committed to Villanova. Sucks for the Spiders (who cares) but glad we don't have to face another Super Super Senior lol
Look, If I was in Burton's shoes, I would have done the same. ur is very lucky that he decided to come back last year to a team that everyone knew wasnt going to be very good.

He likely has graduated. He played four years. He is moving on. No harm in that.

I wish him well. The kid can ball. Sadly his teammates weren't up to his level. I would have liked to have seen him at Marquette with SS. With Proser staying in the draft he would have fit nicely at the wing.

Berry wasn’t anymore the “alpha” on that team than Meeks or Justin Jackson. Even Pinson was the heart of that 2016 team.
On that team with May, Raymond Felton was every bit as much the” alpha.” Rashad McCants had been the best player on that team for much of the time those 3 were on campus.
That team with Hansbrough didn’t become as good as it was until he took a bit of a backseat to Ty Lawson during his senior season.

None of those teams had one guy that was the leader above all others.

And UNC has won 6 championships. Surprised you didn’t go back to Lenny Rosenbluth in all of that.

Tyler Hansborough was Mr. College Basketball. They won the chip a year after he was the NCAA POY, he was first team All ACC, made the most free throws in ACC history, all time leading scorer. If you dont think he as the Alpha you dont know what Alpha means.

Joel Berry -"despite playing with injuries to both ankles, Berry led the Tar Heels to a 2017 NCAA men's basketball championship. In the national title game against Gonzaga, Berry scored 22 points and had six assists, and was thereafter named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four," Wiki

Not my words, sounds like an Alpha to me. However, I can go with Jackson.

Yes, they have won 6 chips but I have no knowledge of who was on those team and who they played other than Dean Smith was on a team that beat KU and Wilt.

In any event, all their winning teams had an Alpha player. However, you do not have to agree and I dont expect you will.

You’re really gonna act like you know more about UNC basketball than me? I watched every single game those teams played and went to a lot of them. Hansbrough missed multiple games his senior season with an injury and Lawson took over the lead role on that team, including setting an NCAA record with 8 steals in the championship game (all in the first half).

And Dean Smith didn’t play for UNC. He played for Kansas under Phog Allen and was on the 1952 national championship team. Lenny Rosenbluth would have been your alpha on the 1957 team that beat Wilt and Kansas in triple overtime after also beating Michigan State in the semifinals in triple overtime. Rosenbluth was 6’4 and played Wilt to a standstill.

I think the whole concept of alphas ranges from overblown to completely ridiculous. The more good players and leaders you have on a team the better. I’ve watch UNC teams win national titles without anyone that would truly be considered an ”alpha.”

BTW, the concept of an alpha in animal society was based on faulty research of wolves and is just pseudo-science that’s made its way into popular culture.
agreed the idea of an “alpha” is so played out. the best carolina teams i remember always had at least two “alphas” a pg leader and a star in the front court i.e. marcus paige and brice johnson. maybe that doesn’t mean they’re alphas as much as that is just the formula for a successful team (having a bunch of strong players all over the court).

His jersey is hanging at both schools. He played one year at Carolina, and then entered the NBA draft with a hardship declaration.

UNC's retired jerseys belong to Lennie Rosenbluth, Phil Ford, George Glamack, Michael Jordan, Antwan Jamison, Tyler Hansbrough, James Worthy and Jack Cobb. No doubt, McAdoo would have been so honored had he played more seasons in Chapel Hill. He may have been Dean Smith's first JUCO transfer. I welcome any information on Vincennes.

@LLLeopold Both of you are correct. His jersey does not hang as part of the retired group horn listed but it does hang as one of the honored jerseys

Hopes this save a few back and forth post.

Retirement at UNC requires being National Player of the Year. McAdoo‘s jersey is honored, which has its own requirements. Being at UNC longer probably wouldn’t have gotten his number retired.

Thanks for your information, but I question why you need to respond to this person/self-serving instigator Leaving at that.

I’m mainly just responding because it’s about UNC. I ignore most of his drivel.

Realistically, on paper at least, we’re probably just hoping for “efficient” production by any combination of the following (for the various positional groups):

1 and 2 - Shulga, Bamisile, Jackson, Nelson, Patrick

3 and 4 - Belle, Bairstow, Billups, Kuany

5 - Wheeler, Fermin, Lawal

Too many unknowns right now to really deep dive into specific roles and expectations but I’d generally lean toward the upperclassmen (plus Belle) as the leaders in the clubhouse right now (regarding significant roles/minutes).

Scholarship #13: To me, the glaring need would be a comparable Bamisile backfill should he not get a waiver. Competent, productive perimeter play/depth is always the top priority in college basketball.

5/31/23

Going into the summer, I'll assume (for now) that Bamisile gets his waiver.

Heading to Greece July 31........

13-player roster:
1-2 =
Shulga, Bamisile, Jackson, Nelson, Patrick
3-4 = Bairstow, Belle, Kuany, Billups, Scholly #13
5 = Wheeler, Lawal, Fermin

Upperclassmen (6): 6'4"Shulga, 6'8"Bairstow, 6'4"Bamisile, 6'9"Kuany, 6'5"Jackson, 6'10"Wheeler
Underclassmen (6): 6'10"Fermin, 6'6"Billups, 6'8"Lawal, 6'6"Belle, 6'5"Patrick, 5'10"Nelson
Undetermined (1): Scholly #13

Preliminary rotation:
1-2
= Shulga, Bamisile, Jackson
3-4 = Bairstow, Belle, Kuany
5 = Wheeler, Lawal

This group (collectively) better hit the weight room hard this summer/fall.

Your projections on preliminary rotation have me drinking kool-aide during summer heat. I think Patrick will find his way into the 1-2 rotation as well. From video he looks really solid on the 20 J off of screen. It’s going to be hard to keep that potential shooting away from PT. But best part of summer is speculation.
