Players 2023-24 Roster Thread

The only thing that kept Tobi out of the starting lineup this year, and going forward, is foul trouble. Until he gets that under control, he will not start. Even coming in off the bench this year, he has had to sit towards the end of the first half quite a few times due to picking up his second foul. Until he cleans up his foul issues, starting him would just send him to the bench earlier in the half - which is not what you want from your starters.

Tobi leads the team in fouls this year with 92. Kuany is second with 80. Fermin is third with 77. That's a lot of fouls, teamwise, down low. VCU's bigs have got to do a better job in this area next year.
Not playing out of position would help. Everyone commits some questionable fouls at times (and I think Tobi's relative newness to the game doesn't help with that), but it's a lot easier to not foul if you aren't trying to body up someone with 20+ pounds on you.

I totally agree, but I also think he has to clean up his game a bit in order to become a starter at VCU. He's averaging 18.9 minutes per game this year. The only thing holding him back from getting more minutes is foul trouble. With his talent, Coach Odom needs to get a minimum 25 minutes per game out of him next year. Tobi will have to clean up his game regarding fouling to achieve those minutes.

One other point regarding Tobi. Posters are saying he is playing out of position playing the 5. Most of his blocks have come in the paint. Tobi's game is being a rim protector. Also, most his points have come from dunks. I'm not so sure Tobi is playing out of position at the 5. He just needs to increase his minutes by fouling less.

He does need to work on his fouling and that will come with experience. Call him a 4 or a 5 but he needs to be paired with someone that can score with their back to the basket.

Yeah, pace of our bigs fouling is very problematic. I didn’t follow closely but might if be lack of size as much as positioning? Most A10 bigs seemed to push us around. The only big above not mentioned is Wheeler. If he had gotten serious minutes he’d likely been sitting by half most every game.

More like "fouled out" by half. Dude seemed to be trying to pickup fouls.

Tobi fouls because he gets pushed around down low. Most of his blocks come from providing good weak side help defense. Many of our opponents chose to attack Tobi in the paint because their 5s had a significant weight advantage. Tobi plays best in space.

Also, Tobi doesn't back down from anyone, even if he is at a size/height disadvantage. He competes. And frankly gets called for some things others don't, maybe because he has to put more effort into moving bigger guys (or to not get moved) than those guys do into moving him.

He gets called a lot, but he also excels at drawing contact and makes most of the resulting free throws. You don't often see that level of toughness.

I also believe Tobi would be better served playing the four, and would be perfect with a stretch 5. Even if he split minutes at the 4/5, the A-10 has enough bruisers that he gets pushed around down low.

He wins three fouling awards this year.

1. The Statue - Most fouls while standing with arms straight up and the opponent jumping into his chest.
2. 11th annual Jared Guest Award - Most fouls 50-94 feet from the hoop.
3. The Chris Paul- Most confused face whenever he gets a stupid foul called on him.

Really hope he comes back. Players like Tobi are needed on winning basketball teams. Guys willing to do the dirty work who can grab boards and block some shots (and in Tobi’s case, get the crowd fired up with some big dunks), but are not ball dominant. If he keeps developing (and plays less 5), he should have a really nice season next year.

I love Tobi and want him back next year.

That is all.
I love Tobi as well and certainly hope we can keep him. He does commit questionable fouls because of his lack of basketball experience. But more than anything he is a competitor and wants to stop/contain his opponent. Unfortunately he does not have the weight in his lower body to stop a bigger player and thus uses his upper body which almost always will result in a foul. What most impressed me about Tobi was his screening down low so Zeb and Bam and others could get to the basket. That is as pure a team play as one can get and he developed it on the fly this year. Love the commitment.
