2024 NCAA Tourney Talk

Utah have only lost twice at home all season (Arizona & Arizona State)
Yeah, but 18 days ago they lost to 12-19 Oregon State. A couple of weeks before that they lost to 14-18 Az State and 15-18 USC, and won by a point vs 15-17 UCLA. We haven't had anything like that kind of loss with a full lineup, and even then it was New Years week.

They are huge and will present special problems. Winning on the road is always hard. But let's not make them out to be a powerhouse. We have a legit shot

Let’s say Mikey Rhoades stayed here at VCU, and didn’t make it to the dance with all his guys this year. You have to believe Ed would be looking for a new coach.

I despised the way MR said he and Jodi were HOME. It was a PR mistake. He straight F’ed up. That being said, you know he was feeling the heat from Ed and donors last year. He lucked out to win the A10 tourney and knew he had to get away from Ed and sell while his stock price was high. No inside Intel, but captain obvious whispered all this in my ear.

Odom will hurt us at some point, but the man never said VCU is home and a DREAM job. So Odom
Is already a better man of character than MR will ever be.
I don't think it's fair to say we lucked out. Those guys played their butts off during conference play (admittedly a down A10) and in spite of having only one path to the dance, he and the team got it done. So MR deserves credit for making it happen and I wouldn't disrespect their accomplishment saying they lucked out.

No problem with everything else you said.

Agree, hard to say a team that won the league by 3 games lucked out in the tournament.

One d a m n year. College sports are becoming garbage. How can anyone be invested in one year coaches and one year players? Eventually it’s gonna turn fans away no less expecting fans to pay for it

I’m with you. It’s already turned me away to an extent. No more regional conferences, coaching carousel every year, and teams basically turning over their rosters every single season. To me, one of the best parts of college hoops is witnessing the development of players from freshman to senior seasons with one program. Those days are beyond over. Of course, players and coaches have every right to job hop all they want, but that doesn’t mean fans have to enjoy it.

One reason I’m really rooting for this Shead kid at Houston. He’s one of the few who have stuck it out for four years at one program. Bacot is another. While I could never root for UNC, I really like that fella for staying true to the program.

And while I’m at it….This past year we bought season tickets to Northwestern women’s hoops. For $150 per family, I got to take my young daughters to a bunch of games courtside at a nice arena and watch some great Big 10 talent. Northwestern was pretty terrible, but who cares. My daughters met the players, most of whom had been there multiple years playing hoops and getting an education at a fantastic institution. They are incredible young ladies.

I’m looking forward to doing that again next year more than anything having to do with the men.

That and it has been mentioned numerous times before... but, one thing that we love as fans is getting to know the coaches & players.... whether it be personally or from a distance as a fan.

And with it becoming more & more of a carousel and rosters flipping year after year.... that bond / connection with players will continue to get smaller and smaller as times go on.

Sure you'll get players from time to time that instantly become fan faves and are good dudes like Kuany or Bam this year, or Shriver last year.... but other players take time to warm up to or become huge fans of.

Half the reason, I'm such a diehard VCU fan is because of the connections I've made over the years.... not just the friends I've made between other Ram fans, not just because @TTL PKG & the Peppas.... but the connections I've made with players over the years. A good number of whom have become like family to me.

Bingo. The only ones sticking around anymore are the ones getting more money to play in college than they would going pro. Zack Edey is another one. I put Daron Holmes in the same category. I expect we're going to hear about him declaring for the draft any day now, but if Dayton can somehow come up with $2 million for him next year, he might stay.

I think every winner of the tournament needs a bit of luck. I also put no value on winning a league with an unbalanced schedule as it relates to saying who is the best team

Nice shoutout for VCU in this Lunardi article.

Here it is, to save you the time:

No. 14: Can you name the only team so far in this postseason to win multiple true road games? That would be VCU. The Rams have won NIT first- and second-round contests at Villanova and South Florida, respectively. They will now visit Utah on Wednesday in the quarterfinals with a trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse as the prize, and I like their chances. For what it's worth, the Utes wouldn't play Utah State when current VCU coach Ryan Odom was the Aggies' head man.

Winning the league by 3 games is even more impressive when VCU always gets the toughest pairings.

You always need a little bit of luck but when the best team won the tournament it’s hard to say they lucked out.
