Players Tobi Lawal transferring to Virginia Tech

We can get into the weeds all day with comparisons, but my point was it’s not going to change VCU’s status amongst the college basketball landscape.

If you can’t beat em, join em. Go poach the top players in CAA, SoCon, Big South, OVC, etc. At this point with the lack of regulation, WGAF?! Get the best roster however you can and win. That’s what we really want as fans, right? Integrity isn’t in the vocabulary of college sports anymore.
The top players of those conferences are not moving to us. They are moving to P5 when they transfer. They are not going mid major to mid major.

Good point. We’ll find our niche in all of this insanity. Our tradition and facilities haven’t changed. VCU is still a very attractive option for a lot of really good players.

Well I guess we should close up shop then 🙄
I didn’t say that. What I’m saying is easy solutions are not there. You can’t simply go ok P5 poach us so let’s poach lesser mid majors. Stars at the lesser mid majors want to get their bag at the P5 schools. So those stars are gonna command a significant bag too.

As far as close up shop you joke yet many mid majors may have to. Some long time D1 programs have already dropped this past year. You just don’t hear about that in between the craziness. We won’t close up but this is gonna hurt us more than programs we historically one upped. Programs like UR will excel in the pay to play world vs us who excelled in player development. Now player development is like dead because like we just saw we’re just developing players to leave in a year or two when they get any hype.

Maybe you can a little. There is some restrictions on international players and NIL but no one really knows the rules it seems
Yeah pretty sure there is a threshold that international players can make as "income" and if they go over that amount they lose their student Visa and would have to get a work Visa. I am not 100 percent on this but I thought that was what I heard but could be wrong. BUT if that is true...it begs the question what drove Tobi to enter?

Collectives get creative with this and international players get there’s.

Some of the reading I've done indicates that student visas allow passive income, but not active income, but that interpretation between the two is less clear than one might wish.

Whatever it was I’m glad we didn’t try and match. Negotiate with one guy and everyone will be bringing an “offer” to match. Depending on what he asked for matching could have been more damaging than letting him walk.
Too late. They are all asking for money. This is the new world.

Rick Pitino had a pretty good “collective” at Louisville until it all got blown up. So did Pete Carroll at USC. Will Wade had strong ass offers. These things tend to work themselves out in the P5 in one form or another.

Randy Moss said it best: “Straight cash, homie!”

Too be honest, while I think it is unlikely, I think he can return. However, when you have real NBA traits but aren’t ready for the NBA, go get a bag or see what you are worth. I don’t really get pissed at kids or coaches when I would do the same thing. Good for Tobi and probably bad for us but life goes on.
