VCU vs. # 15 University of Tennessee in 1981 brought to you by Mistachill!

This is rare footage for you to see players such as Kenny Stancell, Danny Kotak, Edmund Sherrod, Monty Knight!
Tennessee had Dale Ellis, a great all-american front court player at the time. According to the commentary, VCU had the longest winning streak in the nation (16 games) coming into this game. In they had won this game, they would have faced UVA with Sampson, Lamp and Raker.

Now we all get to see the classic hey day rams teams and compare them to the new teams under Grant and Smart.

Boy, I forgot how the lack of a 3 pt line made a difference in the style of play.

Again, Natty, XJohnx, Marcus Nation, and Matt Nation, Please put a sticky on this! Don't let it get lost in the list of threads....this is too valuable to lose a source of reference for VCU fans.

I was at that game. I remember we held the ball for about 4 minutes at the end, Kottak got pushed out of bounds and they gave the ball to Tennessee. Lost at the buzzer in OT. Devastating. It was close, even though they completely shut Stancell down.

This, along with the Memphis State and JD interview videos are very cool, and I agree that it's great for fans to see this stuff for perspective, so thanks for pointing them out (although, as you say, 'chill gets credit for their availability in the first place)

... but all in separate threads that you want all stickied on the main BBall forum? That's kinda nuts.

It would make for a big cluster of unchanging sticky threads at the top of the page, which would mean fewer contemporary threads on the front page, plus it would create a more static first impression if the first thing folks see is the same top threads, visit after visit. I could get behind a single sticky thread (or even a sub-forum) meant to be more of a historical catch-all/scrapbook, or maybe even a narrow-subject historical sticky thread of the week (as long as it was kept fresh on a regular basis), but not a bunch of individual hey-look-what-I-found type threads... I mean, consider how many videos, articles, and subjects could accumulate... do we arbitrarily stop at these 3 videos? If not, how much?

Even as unsticky threads, having all 3 separate is a little annoying, imo... why not combine the 3 under the subject of the J.D.-Era? ...not to mention the fact that the stuff is already out there and available to find with just some simple searching

I just watched the whole game. We lost again. Officiating was terrible. Howard Wood should have fouled out in the first half alone. Tennessee with 3 fouls in the second half. What a joke.

Don't forget, no shot clock either.

Billy Packer was even dumber then, then he is now- if that is even possible. Don't you love the Sunbelt Conference talk..... with "The University of South Alabama at Birmingham?" What a freakin' moron. Some things never change i guess. If it isn't Wake, or the ACC, then it don't mean jack.

I remember it all too well. Thought we had the game won. We was robbed!

Absolutely, I think the Sun belt were the first conference to bring in the 35-second shot clock and 3pt line around 1982. experimental basis. I am pretty sure that none of the power conferences were using either at the time until about 1985.

I like the idea of a sub-forum...Natty, Marcus, Matt and John- Can you put up a sub-forum for VCU Basketball History?

A VCU History section would be great.

Do not you love ..... Sunbelt's conference call with the "University of South Alabama in Birmingham it?" An engraved "idiot.

When did the player intro change from when the player from each team announced would go to center court, wait and shake hands with the opposing player to today's format of all the starters from the visitors are announced first then the home team?

Tough lost!! I'm a former player (1981-1983). As a Jr College transfer that game played a role in me choosing VCU. I'd like to congratulate Coach Smart on the Historical Final Four season and extend best wishes for this season. With that said I'm always touched to see any reference to the 1979-1985 era. This is the most successful period in the history of VCU Mens Basketball. JD Barnett who stifiled me as an individual player undisputably had great success. I believe he had the winningest percentage as a VCU Mens Basketball Coach. 5 NCAA appearances out of 6 seasons; 4 Sunbelt Conference Regular Season Championships (1981,83,84,85) and 3 Sunbelt Tournament Championships (1980,81,85). Coaching staff listing Tuby Smith, Dave Hobbs and Jim (Snuffy) Smith to name a few. Tuby Smith goes on to win a National Championship as head coach of Kentucky and make final four, elite 8, sweet sixteen appearances and be recognized as one of college basketballs top coaches. Dave Hobbs as head coach of Alabama goes to the sweet sixteen.
During the JD Barnett era 8-9 of his players in a 6 season time period were drafted in the NBA. The players and coaches created an atmosphere of not just winning but as Champions. To date there are only 19 VCU players ever drafted. I believe at least 15 players are pre 1990. Jesse Dark, Bernard Harris, Gerald Henderson, Ren Watson, Greg McCray, Edmund Sherrod, Kenny Stancil, Monty Knight, Fred Brown, Calvin Duncan, Rolando Lamb, Mike Schlegel, Nicky Jones, Phil Stinnie, Ken Jones, Rich Jones, Sherron Mills, Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders these names should never be forgotten. I hope I didn't offend anyone for this is just my opinion stated with some facts. I believe I played a part in some of the success by being an All Sunbelt Conference, All Virginia, All Region, NBA draftee and international Pro. CBS Chevrolet MVP, ESPN Amateur Athlete and many other awards and honors.I love and respect the entire VCU family.
