Ok, please don't crucify me but I am a closet Dick Tarrant fan. I always had alot of respect for him as human being as well as coach. It was a privilege for me as a long time college basketball fan in the 1980's to watch him match wits with J.D Barnett. I admire the man because, as I understand, he was a high-school chemistry teacher at one time.

I was overjoyed to find the original Giant slayer's game on youtube from 1984.. you have respect a coach that can lead his team to a victory over SEC Team with Charles Barkley. What's interesting to note is that future VCU Coach Sonny Smith was barkey's coach auburn. Smith was great recruiter but only a so-so tactician.

After watching this tape, I submit to you that beating a higher seed was alot harder back then without the 3 pt shot, because the higher seed team with the bigger front line could just pack it in to zone and force the mid major to shoot outside 2 pointer...At any rate much respect for dick tarrant.

Classic Barnett vs Tarrant. UR had all everything Johnny Neuman and a really good guard named Greg Beckwith and I believe the year was 1984. The game was at the Robbins Center and Ro Lamb as usual drew the toughest defensive assignment, in this case Neuman. Ro had a good defensive game and while not shutting Neuman down he made him work to get everything and kept him from dominating the game.

On the offensive end of the floor Barnett pulled everyone out to the perimeter and posted up a bigger Ro over the spindly Beckwith. Very entertaining to see Ro back Beckwith down to the basket and just kill UR, Finally Tarrant started rotating another player over to help Beckwith. Ro would hit the open guy with a pass everytime. What a beautiful game plan and it worked to perfection.

Of course J.D.'s stable of assistant coaches, David Hobbs and Tubby Smith most likely helped in drawing up this game plan. J.D. used to come up with some innovative game plans. One of his chief collaborators was the late but then Randy Mac coach Hal Nunnally.

This recollection is subject to correction as this event happened a long time ago and I'm an old fart and my memory isn't what it used to be,

Tarrant always had fits with Barnett X's and O's...we held have a decided advantage while J.D was here...Amazing Coaching Staffs Hobbs and Tubby (1 NCAA Championship...)...I remember beckwith..little guy..I saw the red-headed spider center in the video ...what was his name?

If I try really hard, I can objectively respect Tarrant, but I will never, ever have an sliver of affection for that %&^#$@*ing fuzzyheaded &$%^** of a ^*%#
