2010-2011 Florida BCS Opponent Confirmed...

You can see what happened to W&M (and to a great extent ODU with their win at Georgetown) this year by scheduling (and winning) those tough away games with BCS programs. You win and it looks GREAT on a resume and generally improves your SOS numbers for team and conference. These type games greatly improve your chances of an at large (provided you win them...and you can't win if you don't play) and is good for the conference chances at multiple bids. Winning on the road, and beating better clubs is good for at large consideration so why not schedule the away games. I'd put our RAMS up against anybody and quite frankly, I'd like to see them go up against these better teams...even if it is only once and on the road. You don't see the top mid-major programs (Gonzaga, Butler, etc.) shying away from away games with BCS schools. I think it would be good for recruiting as well...for our athletes to get better playing time here than they might at a BCS program yet still have some opportunity to compete against BCS teams and show them what they missed out on.

Interesting that we are salivating at playing South Florda, and at one time they were just an ordinary team in the same conference with us. Have we fallen behind?

From an athletics standpoint, we have. But we've really out-done them from a campus standpoint over the last 30 years. I was there for the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Tournament way back in 1980. Today, the place looks almost the same, only older and shabbier. VCU over the last 30 years, on the other hand, what a difference.

To be fair though, VCU's campus had nowhere to go but up. I was there in the late 80's and early 90's. What the building and improvements have really done is bring us up to par with major state universities (and may have put us ahead in spots). We were sorely lacking before.

Football is the major sports difference between USF and VCU. They have it and we don't - - this is the main reason they gained admittance to the Big East once Miami and FSU bolted for the ACC. ODU ticks me off a bit, because in 10 years they could be in spot with their football program, facilities and location to go to a much better conference.

They're in the Big East. That should make it obvious we've fallen behind them. Or more accurately, they've moved ahead of us.

Absolutely. We fell behind when we dropped to the CAA, and then they pushed even further ahead of where they were when they got football and moved to the Big East. Just like a number of Metro conference mates such as Louisville and Virginia Tech.

So did theirs, but it didn't.

P.S. FSU is coming up on its 20 year anniversary in the ACC. Their leaving the Metro was one of the forces that led to VCU's and USF's admittance to the Metro. FSU was never in the Big East.

I can't believe a lot of you posters with this "holier than thou" attitude regarding VCU playing South Florida, a Big East team. This is not an A-10 team. It is a Big East team. Look at who this team has beaten this year. They beat Georgetown at Georgetown (in front of a large crowd unlike ODU). They have beaten Pitt, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and UVA. They are not the South Florida many of you remember from the Sunbelt/Metro days. This is not an upper tier CAA school. It's the Big East. It's also a winnable game against a decent RPI. VCU also plays Wake Forest next year.

You guys complain when we schedule Hampton, Tulane, Bethune Cookman and ECU and you still complain when we schedule a Big East school because it's not Georgetown or Villanova. What exactly are you guys expecting from a mid-major school that no one wants to play at the Stu? This is a great addition to our non-conference schedule and adds exposure in a state (Florida) which we have recruited well in the last 4 years.

Get off of your soap boxes people and accept VCU for what it is!

lol... looks like you're the one on a soap box. This game will be ok, but nothing special. We've been having games like... or arguably better than ... this for the past few seasons now... Oklahoma, Maryland, Arkansas, Miami... so this one seems like nothing new, and frankly, a lower level of team than those previous ones. I'm not saying we shouldn't schedule a game like this, I just think hyping it as something huge is pretty stupid... yeah, they're technically BCS, but they're as about as unimpressive a BCS team as we could have found, and it registers pretty darn high on the wgaf meter.

Of the 4 teams you mentioned, only one team was a home and home with VCU and that was Oklahoma who had to play us due to Capel's contract. The other three teams were a result of tournaments played at neutral sites. So, other than Oklahoma, name me the last BCS team to play VCU at the Stu?

I'm not hyping South Florida. I'm saying they are on par for the type of games VCU should be looking to schedule with hopes of a return game.
