2010-2011 - VCU hosting tournament in Richmond

In Dec. 74, the Rams defeated St. Peter's, then fell to Texas A&M in the finals of the Lions Holiday Tournament at the Coliseum. It was in the A&M finale that Richard Jones took a terrible tumble and suffered head and back injuries and missed the next 12 games
.

That was a horrible fall and Dickie probably suffered brain damage from it. He was mentally not the same
dude after that.

E - Dickie Red's injury vs. A&M was a physical setback, but it had nothing to do with his current limitations. Of all the players to suit up for the Rams over the decades, Jones might have had the most potential in the business world. His fall from glory represents perhaps the saddest chapter in VCU hoops.

Dickie Red still attends VCU games but most of his old fans can hardly recognize him. Hopefully, VCU provides season tickets.

Jones was a springy, savvy, undersized, 6-3'ish forward who led Maggie L. Walker High to the State Group AAA championship before signing with then VCU coach Chuck Noe.

I still remember Times-Dispatch sports editor Bill Millsaps' lead paragraph the day after the signing: "The best player on the best high-school team in Virginia is coming to VCU."

F Tech and UVa. Rather, let's get a good team to come to Richmond for the tourney.

VCU
Oklahoma
Alabama
Florida

It would be safe to say that this might stir some interest among basketball fans in the commonwealth and could possibly sell out the coliseum. 8-)

P.S. I can remember how exciting the old TDIT was at holiday time. Many people would receive tickets as gifts and the buzz around Richmond was substantial. The games were very well attended and many great players were involved in some games that can only be described as intense.

I think that lineup would be moderately impressive, but not especially compelling to those not already steeped in the black & gold. The connections involved are probably too inside-baseball to motivate many beyond those that would already pack the SC anyway. I doubt many beyond these boards are really all that wrapped up in who our former coaches are. At least the Gators would have their recent championships as clout, but are there really that many in Richmond who give much of an F about the Sooners or Tide? If we want to build our brand as something other than "coach X's team," or "coach Y's old team," we need to establish geographical identity, and that means going after the major conference teams from the area between NYC and ATL.
