The 4 hosts are UCLA, Tennessee, Villanova, and Wake Forest, each in a 4-team pod with the pod-winner moving on to Madison Square Garden in New York City.

UCLA regional:
UCLA, Nevada, Pepperdine, Pacific

Tennessee regional:
Tennessee, Missouri State, Belmont, Arkansas State

Villanova regional:
Villanova, George Washington, Boston University, Marist

Wake Forest regional:
Wake Forest, VCU, Winthrop, Hampton

We'll have to beat Winthrop to play Wake Forest, facing Hampton if we don't. If we do beat Winthrop and then Wake to move on to New York, Villanova, Tennessee, and UCLA are not bad games by any means. :) Wake will be young with a new coach and we'll have an experienced back court which should give us a good chance. We can't look past Winthrop as they are a solid program with a history of success under Coach Gregg Marshall (who since moved on to Wichita St.) which continued last year going 19-14 with their 5th NCAA berth in 6 seasons and 9th since 1999. They return 5 of their top 6 scorers and are led by rising junior Reggie Middleton who averaged 10.1 ppg last season. It looks like we're probably in the toughest pod as Winthrop and Wake were NCAA teams last year, and we all know how much Hampton gives us problems. It'll be a good early season test for us.

We should have a good chance to advance. However, expect upsets as this is very early in the season. I do really like our chances given our veterans and depth.

That'll be an exciting start to the season

I agree that early season offers the best chance for upsets...but with all the uncertainty and youth around Wake...Perhaps them beating us would be an upset?? 8-)

Is this the first time VCU has been in the Pre-season NIT? If not how did we fare last time?

Will all the games be on ESPN? or just the MSG ones?

In 2004, we played American at home and won 82-76OT, then went on to play at Wake Forest and lost 81-67. This was after we played Wake in the 2004 NCAA tournament earlier that year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_I ... Tournament

"ESPN continues to provide television coverage of the tournament. The NIT has a 10-year, $24.1 million contract with ESPN"

The source is wikipedia but I am sure I remember seeing most of the NIT on ESPN, even the lower tier games in the preseason NIT. If this holds true, then it'll be great to watch the Rams on ESPN for a change!
