Don't have much info since it's a paid article, but it said " VCU head coach Shaka Smart watched Chris Wilson in the afternoon."

ESPN doesnt have a write up on him but lists him as a 90 (#39PG) and considering VCU. Didnt find a rivals listing, yet. I am really seeing a pattern as Wilson is yet another lefty. Also based on the scout listing of 2011 NC products he is ranked 11th.

He's from Eric Maynor territory.

I have a question related to that. What are the rules regarding something like, having Maynor contact recruits or even perhaps hang with them if he's in the area? Legal?

I think so, unless Eric starts donating to VCU then it would be a no no.

13.02.12 R ecruiting. Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospective student-athlete or a prospective studentathlete’s relatives (or legal guardians) by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospective student-athlete’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program.

13.02.12.1 Recruited Prospective Student-Athlete. Actions by staff members or athletics representatives that cause a prospective student-athlete to become a recruited prospective student-athlete at that institution are:
. . .
(b) Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians; . . .
(c) Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospective student-athlete, the prospective studentathlete’s relatives or legal guardians on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment; . . .
13.02.13 Representative of Athletics Interests. A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests”
is an individual, independent agency, corporate entity (e.g., apparel or equipment manufacturer) or other organization who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration to: (Revised: 2/16/00)
(a) Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program;
(b) Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;
(c) Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;
(d) Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or
(e) Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program.

13.02.13.1 Duration of Status. Once an individual, independent agency, corporate entity or other organization is identified as such a representative, the person, independent agency, corporate entity or other organization retains that identity indefinitely. (Revised: 2/16/00)

The rules do seem a bit squishy, but I'd think donor or not, there's a fairly strong argument that EM has been otherwise involved in promoting the institution’s athletics program.

Seems kinda flashy and cheesy but having an NBA player show up to your house in his Range Rover and taking you out would be a nice way of saying, "look where I am now and I went through VCU to get there".

We'll have 3 guards in Joey, Ed, and Brandon leaving, so it makes sense to look at a couple of guards. It would be nice to shore up the frontcourt as well. Chris looks like a quality recruit. We're going up against ODU right now, which I'm not really concerned about...but I'm sure some bigger schools will come calling once his senior year comes around.

The staff has backed off on recruiting Chris Wilson (he's a bit slow for our system and might do better in a slower more methodical system). The staff is going after a guard they feel is flat-out better at this point and also a better fit for our system. We are in good shape with him right now. Wilson may actually end up at ODU and that would be a good fit for his playing style. He's a good point guard but our guy is good enough in our staff's estimation that they've slowed down on recruiting Wilson.

We are looking at 2 guards to fill out the 2011 class along with Henry and Wilson. If we don't find a suitable mid-year transfer this season to replace Grayson's scholly, we'll go with a big in the 2011 class. We will be in excellent shape going forward if we get both and we could hear news regarding at least one in the next month. Along with Henry, our staff has these 2 guards pegged as high-major caliber.

Are Eric McKnight and Jonathan Graham totally off the table? What constitutes "signed" once the spring signing period is over? I thought both made committments after that ended. Any chance of picking up one of them?

Thanks for sharing--interesting. IMHO this clause seems excessive. I've never really thought about it but "indefinitely" seems somewhat severe to me. Even felon's get to eventually vote again and return to the real world , but I guess not in the world of the NCAA. Controls are needed, but at times those guys are little more than Nazi's keeping their positions of power.

I am sometimes at odds with the NCAA but By-law 13.02.13.1 is right on target. Its very difficult for a compliance professional to keep track of all these entities in the first place, let alone trying to figure out if they are no longer a representative of athletics interests. Chances are if such a change were ever to take place, a By-law change and a couple of vague interps would come down outlining the perimeters for such a new designation...and we would need several secondary violations to further define the outer limits. When faced with all of that mess, the alternative (which is the a lifetime designation) seems far more feasible and appropriate.

They are both off the table. McKnight signed with Iowa State and Graham signed with Penn State.
