2022-23 NET rankings and metrics

3, 13, 15, 21
The final NET rankings of the final 4 teams.
Is there somewhere we could pull up the NET rankings at the beginning of the tourney. It would be interesting to see how well its predictive powers did.

If you click on the date you can see any previous NET rankings you want. Of course, since the last change in the NET was the Selection Sunday NET, you can just scroll down and it'll show you what their previous ranks were.

The final NET rankings of the 2022-23 season are out. Here's how the A10 did.

#269 Loyola Chicago
We finally got that second quality Q1 loss to end the season!

Just looking at from sweet 16 through championship game the NET was 8-7 in predicting the winner. Slightly better than flipping a coin.

Well, if you flip that coin 15 times (8+7), that is as close to 50/50 as you can get.
Yep, was trying to give the NET the benefit of the doubt, but that's true.
So, after the absolute 50/50 until the final game the NET got the final game right. So there's that. But mostly the NET as a predictor in this small sample looks about like a coin flip.

Interesting that the bottom 5 teams in the A-10 either had a new coach or were in their first year of A-10 membership.

I'm hoping they're a legit program and not just the result of a fortunate coaching hire when Porter Moser starting winning there.
IMO They will be fine. If you do a film study of them, you will see they ran much better sets on offense than we did. The problem is last year they only had two and maybe.........3 upper level A10 players. What they do with their roster this year will be very telling. Unfortunately, they really need to pull a Keith Dambrot and help several kids find other schools . So far they have had 4 kids hit the portal from this years team and could probably stand for 2 more to do the same before May 11. Adding Watson was good for them but they still need to get a couple more pieces

So are the ending NET rankings the starting point for beginning rankings next year? Or do they put all the P5s first?

I think they let them play about 5 games, then rank all the P5s mostly first. They’ll throw in some head scratching mid majors to make it look fair, but these are the teams we all know that will quickly fall out of the top 100. And that’s also by design. By the end of the season a few mid majors will be lucky enough not to have any bad losses since they have hardly any Q1 ops to make up for it, and claw into relevancy. Again, by design to make it look fair.
