2024-25 Opponent Tracking

#1 seed is great…don’t get me wrong …but unless winning the league gets us into the dance (as most years it does) its more about the bracket…whose on your side.
Yes.... 4 of the first 5 years in the A10 we were the 2 seed and we made the A10 Title in all of those tournaments. Our matchups in the Quarterfinals were Joes (2013), Richmond (2014), UMass (2016), and Mason in (2017) and our regular season record vs those teams in those seasons totaled 5-1 (only loss was at UMass in 2016). Our matchups in the Semifinals were UMass (2013), GW (2014), Davidson (2016), and Richmond (2017) and our regular season record vs those teams in those seasons totaled 6-1 (only loss was at GW in 2014). Each of these seasons I liked our side of the bracket and it got us to the A10 title game.

Oddly enough.... in 2015 we were the 5 seed and our opponents were Fordham, Richmond, Davidson, & Dayton and we had a 3-4 record vs those teams that regular season, but something was in the air in Brooklyn that weekend so it didn't matter!

Look at 2019..... VCU went 1-1 vs Rhode Island that year and things easily could have been different if Marcus Evans doesn't get hurt, but he did and we lost to a team that had already beaten us that year.

All those things are true but riddle me this, if they are so sub par, then why do I constantly see on this board if Dayton can get power schools at home why cant we, If they can do X why cant we? Seems odd to envy or want what some one considered so inferior has
Apart from why: they have a better home arena

Mason wins and improves to 8-1 in the A-10. Are they that good or have they not played the better teams yet (including VCU)?

For me, the reason is we have a competitive rivalry with Dayton. I want VCU to be better than every team in the A10 so when any team, regardless of whether that team is our closest conference peer or not, gets something we don't/can't I am envious.

We have become rivals, maybe not traditional ones yet but certainly from a competition standpoint, and part of any rivalry is envy, pride, greed, hatred, jealousy, and ego. Which is what makes sports fun.

I pointed those stats out not to say VCU was so much better or superior to Dayton but to point out that Dayton is not superior to us. After beating Marquette (great win) and a UCONN team who just wanted to get the heck out of Hawaii Dayton fans were acting like they'd run the table Obi style and that they had outgrown the A10. Even the media joined the bandwagon. So yeah I am getting great pleasure this season out of seeing them lose to soon-to-be MACtion UMass and the GW Colonials.

I will say that I think as a whole Dayton's Athletic Department, at least recently, is miles ahead of VCUs in sports other than basketball. Just look at this season with men's soccer finishing #12 in the country and women's volleyball making it to the Sweet 16 and actually being competitive against powerhouse Nebraska. They also have a home arena that is miles ahead of the Stu. Lately, their fanbase has been better or at the very least more loyal as well.

VCU is killing them head to head. The rams own the series right now, so it's not really a rivalry.
the funny part of owning them is that MR was the VCU coach that owned them

dayton is always the one game I would pay to see annually but maybe that is just me

I maybe wrong but Mason was a thorn for a bit the last few years. Particularly when they came here.

Regarding Dayton they absolutely are outperforming us in some sports. In regards to their arena quite simply UD basketball is the main thing to do in Dayton. Don’t get me wrong they love their sports but it’s just a fact. For them that’s really all the city has to look forward to all year. Through the 2010s we packed SC and there was talk about expansion. VCU fanbase could very well get back to those packed days where one day a bigger arena is needed.

Unfortunately, right now fmason has the inside track to the regular season championship. They have already beaten Dayton in their only meeting and only play SLU and VCU once each, although both are on the road. VCU and Dayton have yet to play a H/H and Dayton is 3 back in the loss column. It's going to take VCU sweeping Dayton and beating fmason or other teams beating fmason along the way. Dayton is pretty much on the outside looking in at this point unless they run the table, and I just don't see them doing that.

George Mason will have 2 more losses than they do now by the time they come to play us. GMU will be an afterthought by then.

Anyone know anything about this new tournament? Does it replace the NIT? If not, I can’t imagine it would have very attractive matchups.

The Crown tournament is essentially the Fox Sports NIT. They are giving auto bids to Fox Sports power conference teams and will battle with the NIT to fill out the at large pool.
