2024-25 Opponent Tracking

Checking several sites I’m seeing the Rams rated 29, 37, and 38. Lunardi had us as first four out on Friday.
We have 9 games left. If we go 7-2 that would leave us at 24-7. As long as we aren’t an early exit in the tournament, I would like to think we would make it as an at large. Say we go 2-1……and end up 26-8. That’s pretty darn good.

Has any NET era team ever made the tourney as an at large w/ 0 Q1 wins? At Dayton is a must win, and it seems 50-50 if it will be a Q1 or Q2 win. Assuming a win at Dayton (which is a big ass assumption), I think that us making the field would depend on Dayton finishing w a Top 75 net.

I mean UNC was just in the field and they were 1-7 in Q1. Now 1-8. I mean that’s pretty freaking bad.

the funny part of owning them is that MR was the VCU coach that owned them

dayton is always the one game I would pay to see annually but maybe that is just me
yep VCU is 15-9 vs Dayton since joining the A10 and 4-0 in the A10 Tournament (including 2-0 in A10 Title Games).

Shaka went 3-1 all vs Archie (including a W in the 2015 A10 Title)
Wade went 1-2 all vs Archie
Rhoades went 10-5 all vs AG (including 3-0 record in A10 Tournament and a W in the 2023 A10 Title) though we did lose by 27 and 30 vs Dayton under MR.
RO is currently 1-1 all vs AG

I know that at times it feels like VCU has underwhelmed in recent years, but VCU is the one A10 program that Dayton has not found a way to consistently beat. heck..... 2 of our 9 losses were vs the insanely good 2019-2020 Dayton team so there was no shame losing to them that year.

I maybe wrong but Mason was a thorn for a bit the last few years. Particularly when they came here.

Regarding Dayton they absolutely are outperforming us in some sports. In regards to their arena quite simply UD basketball is the main thing to do in Dayton. Don’t get me wrong they love their sports but it’s just a fact. For them that’s really all the city has to look forward to all year. Through the 2010s we packed SC and there was talk about expansion. VCU fanbase could very well get back to those packed days where one day a bigger arena is needed.
VCU is 16-4 vs Mason in A10 play. I think the thorn in our side comment stems from the fact that Mason won 3 of 4 times at The Stu under MR (2018 Senior Night which dropped VCU from potential 4 seed to 8 seed, 2020 game in February which started VCUs end of year drop off, & 2021 game in February where we thought Bones broke his ankle). Only other loss was a really bad one in 2016 under Wade which almost killed our resume. Overall though.... we've still kicked their ass.

Keep in mind, VCU will be 23-7 vs D1 competition because the D2 win won't appear on team sheets. 25 overall wins (23 or 24 regular season wins and 1 or 2 A10 Tournament wins) would put us in pretty darn good shape, but the lack of Q1 wins (best shot is winning at Dayton later this week and Dayton being good enough to stay Top 75) is what hurts the resume.

I can't speak for Q1 specific wins, but I believe lowest combination of Q1/Q2 wins was 5 total in 2019 (first year of NET) when Belmont received an at-large 11 seed (played in First Four vs Temple). Belmont had 2 Q1 wins and 3 Q2 wins and their only W vs an NCAA team was over Murray State (Ja Morant led team that received the OVC auto bid) so none of their wins were vs NCAA at-large level teams.

In the RPI era that was 2011 when the breakdown was 1-50, 51-100, 101-200 across the board with no deviation between Home, Away, and Neutral, a specific ACC team named Clemson went 0-5 vs the Top 50 while VCU had 3 wins away from home in the Top 40! Jay Bilas and Dicky V had an aneurism on national television saying that VCU and UAB shouldn't have been in over Colorado and VT w/o mentioning that Clemson stunk. Pissed me off!

Regarding UNC, the thing that gets me is the NINE opportunities for a Q1 win. One was at home and one was in Charlotte (basically a home game), and two were on a neutral court. I think these Rams given the same opportunity could get more than one win;…….. but we get no opportunity.
It is what it is. At the end of the day you play who is on your schedule and do the best you can. In that sense I think the Rams are doing very, very well.

Although VCU has no Q1 wins, the one thing VCU has in its favor is it has zero bad losses to non P4 schools.

George Mason will have 2 more losses than they do now by the time they come to play us. GMU will be an afterthought by then.

fmason will NOT be an afterthought by the time they come to VCU. Even if they were to lose two games, VCU would have to only lose only one game and the VCU/fmason game would still be for first place - assuming SLU loses at least one game before then. And fmason's remaining schedule is much easier than VCU's.

I’m not getting my hopes up for an at large. We’ll finish with a good record and net ranking and get hammered for our resume. Just a couple more quality ooc games and we’d probably be in comfortably. This team is good and deserves to be in the tournament but I’m not so sure there will be enough for the committee to latch onto for us. But again, I’m no bracketologist so I’m hoping I’m wrong
